MG has launched the new Windsor in India, with introductory prices starting from Rs 9.99 lakh (ex-showroom, India). The Windsor is MG’s first product in the country since it announced its partnership with JSW earlier this year and the third EV in the carmaker’s lineup after the ZS EV and the Comet. Bookings will officially open on October 3 and deliveries will commence from October 12.

    1. Windsor has a claimed range of 331km
    2. Gets 135 degree reclining rear seats, panoramic glass roof
    3. Bookings to commence on October 3

What’s interesting, is that the battery is available on a rental basis, which means the price of the car is exclusive of the battery. MG is calling it Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS), where essentially, buyers pay a nominal fee per kilometre driven, which is Rs 3.5 per km. MG claims this lowers the initial acquisition cost and the per-kilometre expense as well.

The Windsor is available in three trims: Excite, Exclusive, and Essence; and four colours: Starburst Black, Pearl White, Clay Beige, and Turquoise Green.

    MG Windsor exterior design

The Windsor has the typical stance and shape of an MPV, but it accommodates only five passengers across two rows, essentially resembling a larger hatchback. Its design is minimalist, with flush door handles, clean surfaces, and full-width LED light bars at both ends. The Windsor has a stepped front-end design with the headlamps mounted on the bumper, adding to its unique aesthetics.

It also gets a large glasshouse that wraps seamlessly around the rear, extended quarter glass sections, and steeply raked front and rear windscreens. There's also generous use of chrome along the windows, the door sills, and the front and rear bumpers. The Windsor rides on 18-inch alloy wheels with a stylish 5-spoke design.

    MG Windsor interior and features

The theme of minimalism continues on the interior, which is finished in black with copper highlights. The dashboard is dominated by a large 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment, there’s a free-floating 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster and the front seat backrest can be fully reclined for what is called the “aero lounge seats,” with 135 degrees recline. Based on a born electric platform, the interior makes good use of space with a flat floor and a large floating centre console with cupholders.

What’s unique about the Windsor in India, is that it thankfully gets physical buttons for the HVAC controls that sit just below the central screen; overseas, all in-cabin controls in the Windsor are cramped onto the screen. Other equipment highlights include wireless connectivity for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, wireless charging, rear AC vents, ventilated front seats, powered driver's seat, 9-speaker Infinity sound system, wireless phone charging, panoramic glass roof and ambient lighting.

Safety features include six airbags, ABS with EBD, all four disk brakes, front and rear parking sensors, ESC, and a 360-degree camera.

    MG Windsor battery and range

The Windsor is powered by a 38kWh LFP battery with prismatic cells that have a claimed range of 331km. The front axle-mounted motor produces 136hp and 200Nm of torque. The Windsor also gets four driving modes – Eco+, Eco, Normal and Sport. MG claims the Windsor is compatible with fast charging, at 45kW, using which the batteries can be juiced up from 0 to 80 percent in 55 minutes. It will also be available with 3.3kW and 7.7kW AC chargers which can charge the battery from 0 to 100 percent in about 14 hours and 6.5 hours, respectively.

MG is offering a lifetime warranty for the battery with unlimited kilometres for first buyers of the vehicle. The company is also offering free public charging for the first year.
