Toyota Corolla recalled due to faulty airbags

Toyota has issued a recall of 7,100 units of the Corolla sedan to fix a malfunction in the front passenger airbag supplied by Japanese firm Takata. The recall is effective for Corollas manufactured between April 2007 and July 2008, and is the company’s third recall for the model in India in under a year.

Toyota has not been the only manufacturer to have announced a recall for faulty airbags internationally. Fellow Japanese manufacturers Nissan and Honda have also been part of a global recall for older generation models featuring airbags from the same manufacturer.

Earlier this year, Toyota Kirloskar Motors, the local subsidiary of Toyota had issued a recall for Corolla models manufactured during the period of July 2003 and March 2007. Prior to this, the manufacturer had announced a recall in November 2014 for 5,834 units of the diesel version, manufactured between June 2010 and May 2011, to replace faulty components that led to the entry of engine oil into the air intake system.

In an official statement, a spokesperson from Toyota Kirloskar Motor said, "As an expansion of the existing service campaign being held voluntarily by Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM), and in line with the global recall by Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC), we have announced a special service campaign for the passenger side airbag in the Corolla model to be extended to Corolla models manufactured during April 2007 till June 2008".

This recall has drawn in over 30 million cars globally, making it the largest recall ever.
