Iโ€™m looking for a car, either an SUV or a sedan. My budget is up to โ‚น25 lakh. The car must-have: a 5-star safety rating and excellent ride comfort; priority is the best suspension in this price bracket for a mix of highway cruising and rough roads.

We suggest you wait for the updated Mahindra XUV 7XO (earlier XUV700), which is launching on 5th January, or for the German siblings, the Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun, as both are due for updates soon as well. Otherwise, you can go ahead with the Tata Harrier or Safari.

I currently drive a 2022 Tata Nexon XZ+ (HS) petrol manual and want to upgrade to a manual car that feels like an enthusiastโ€™s car with great throttle response and engaging driving dynamics, since I find the Nexonโ€™s response laggy. My budget is around โ‚น20 lakh. I have shortlisted the VW Virtus GT 1.5 and the Skoda Kushaq. Are there any other manual cars I should consider?

Since you want to upgrade from your Tata Nexon to a fun-to-drive manual car, you should consider the Volkswagen Taigun 1.5 TSI MT. The Taigun is one of the best handling midsize SUVs, and its 150hp, 1.5-litre turbo-petrol is one of the punchiest around.

You could also consider the Skoda Kushaq or the Skoda Slavia/Volkswagen Virtus, but none of those get a manual gearbox option with the 1.5 TSI engine - only a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic.

Hello team, I read your blogs regularly and value your reviews. Please guide me on which car I should buy from my shortlisted options. This will be my first car, and I enjoy driving. My requirements are a minimalist design (not too many gadgets), a manual transmission, good comfort and space, and a roomy boot. Iโ€™ve shortlisted the Volkswagen Virtus, Honda Amaze, and Hyundai Basalt. My budget is โ‚น12โ€“14 lakh. Please advise.

Thank you for your support. We're happy to help!

Coming to your question, the Honda Amaze, while practical and comfy, does not have the driving thrill you would want.

The Volkswagen Virtus, while impressive, will not fit in your budget apart from the base variant, which isn't too impressive. The Citroen Basalt X will be a good pick out of this lot. It has a punchy turbo-petrol engine that is lovely to drive, the ride comfort is excellent, and it has a large boot as well.

Also, while it is feature-packed, it isn't unnecessarily complicated, and the functions are easy to use. The Basalt X would be our recommendation.

I own a 2017 i20 Sports petrol and want to upgrade to an SUV. Iโ€™m a driving enthusiast and use the car for daily office commute as well as long weekend trips, so usage will be mixed. I like the Hyundai Creta and Alcazar but worry about their mileage and modest petrol power. Is there a reliable, feature-packed alternative (not Suzuki) that offers better fuel efficiency and driving enjoyment?

That is a difficult balance to achieve, but two cars come close to your requirements, the Volkswagen Taigun GT 1.5 turbo and the Skoda Kushaq 1.5 TSi

Both use the same engine, and their performance is on par with the Hyundai Creta 1.5 turbo, which already offers strong performance. The advantage of the VW and Skoda engines is cylinder deactivation, which helps significantly on the highway.

When the engine is under low load, it can shut down two of the four cylinders to save fuel and improve efficiency. Both cars are well-equipped, too. We would suggest waiting for the facelift versions, which are expected very soon.

Iโ€™m really confused about choosing between the Virtus GT-Line (Carbon Steel Grey matte) and a mid-size SUV like the Creta.

Your usage should determine which car suits you best. The Volkswagen Virtus, being a sedan, is one for keen drivers as it's got punchy turbo petrol engines and a sorted ride and handling balance.

A midsize SUV like the Hyundai Creta, on the other hand, will be better for the family-oriented as it has a more spacious and practical cabin.

Hi team, I am planning to buy a new car before March 2026. My budget is Rs 25 lakh. I have a family of four, and my monthly driving will be around 1,500km. The cars I currently have in mind are listed below. Please suggest the best option from these, or recommend an alternative if required. 1. Hyundai Creta Diesel AT (top-end) 2. Kia Seltos (should I wait for the facelift?) 3. Volkswagen Taigun (wait for facelift) 4. BYD Atto 3 (top model or wait for facelift) 5. Tata Sierra

Given your high usage of 1,500km per month, an electric car is not advisable, and thus we would rule out the BYD Atto 3, which, while an excellent vehicle, is also priced considerably higher than the others you have listed.
Of the remaining cars, we would recommend a diesel, given your usage. That would also rule out the Volkswagen Taigun facelift, which will continue with petrol engines only.
The Tata Sierra has a strong enough diesel engine, which comes with a smooth 6-speed torque converter automatic, but it's quite loud and lacks a strong punch.
While not enough is known about the new-generation Seltos yet, between it and the Hyundai Creta, the former is probably the better bet. It will likely use the same smooth, refined 1.5-litre diesel and 6-speed automatic gearbox, but on the whole, the Kia Seltos is expected to be larger and packed with even more tech. We think it is the one you should hold out for.

I am looking to buy a petrol automatic, preferably a sedan. My on-road budget is โ‚น20 lakh. What are my options?

Given your requirement and budget, you currently have four options. The Skoda Slavia and Volkswagen Virtus are mechanically identical, and they stand out for their punchy turbo petrol engine options and ride and handling balance.

The Honda City has a refined 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine and has the best back seat. The Hyundai Verna, meanwhile, has the most features, and it can be had with either a turbo-petrol or a naturally-aspirated petrol engine.

The Slavia, Virtus and Verna have also received a full, 5-star safety rating from Global NCAP.

I plan to replace my 2020 Ford Freestyle with a turbo model that delivers better stability, ride comfort, and more power. My budget is โ‚น20 lakh - which turbo options should I consider?

As per your requirements, you should choose between the Skoda Kushaq and the Volkswagen Taigun. Both midsize SUVs offer decent ride comfort, good high-speed stability and both come with powerful 150hp, 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engines.

You'll also appreciate both SUVs' driving dynamics. Both are mechanically identical and differ only in terms of exterior and interior design. Dealers will also be offering sizeable year-end discounts on both.

Hi, I own a Nexon EV, which is suitable for my daily drive of approximately 100 km. I want to buy a 4/5-star-rated automatic car that should be easy for my wife to drive in the city and can also be taken out of the city without worrying about range (like with an EV). I don't want an AMT. Mileage is not a concern. My current consideration set includes the Kylaq, Taigun, Elevate, Hyryder/Victoris, and Astor. I only want to spend 4 lakhs more than the Kylaq if there is a compelling case. Please advise.

Given your requirements, your best bet is probably the Skoda Kylaq. It has a 5-star Bharat NCAP crash test rating, and is equipped with a 6-speed torque converter automatic that is smooth with its shifts. Plus, it's compact with light controls, so it should be easy to drive around town.
The Volkswagen Taigun is a good bet, but might not make a compelling enough case for the premium over the Kylaq, which shares the same platform, engine, and gearbox.
You could opt for the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder or the Maruti Suzuki Victoris, but only if you want significantly higher mileage, but for that, the strong hybrid versions would require a stretch of the budget.

VW Taigun vs Skoda Kushaq. Which would be better for city usage, with a maximum of 500-600 km a month? My budget is below 18 lakh.

The Volkswagen Taigun and Skoda Kushaq are both identical SUVs in terms of mechanics, so they will also deliver pretty much the same driving experience.
Both SUVs come with a 115hp, 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine that's mated to a smooth 6-speed torque converter gearbox that's ideal for city usage, and both will also fit in your budget.
It all boils down to which SUV's design and interior you prefer. Furthermore, there'll also be sizeable year-end discounts available on both SUVs, so see which brand is giving you the better deal.
