โข1wWe are planning to buy a luxury SUV and had initially shortlisted the Mercedes-Benz GLS and the BMW X7. However, after noticing that the Porsche Cayenne is available at a similar price point, we have become quite confused about which option to choose. Could you please advise which package would be better overall?

Autocar India
The Rs 1.3 crore-1.4 crore segment is interesting because it offers up two very different kinds of SUVs. On one hand, the Mercedes-Benz GLS and BMW X7, which are larger and more spacious, and on the other, the Porsche Cayenne and Range Rover Sport, which, though not as practical, have more emotional appeal and arguably stronger badge value. Both have their place, and the larger X7 and GLS are not short on luxury and tech. They both offer petrol and diesel engine options, and a lot of features, and there's the advantage of both brands' wider service network around the country. Between the two, the BMW has a slight edge on space, comfort and driver enjoyment, whereas the Mercedes feels a bit more luxurious and tech-laden. If practicality is the primary focus, one of these should be your choice. However, as you're considering a Porsche Cayenne, it suggests you're okay with five seats. The Cayenne is perhaps the best driving SUV of this size, and even with the entry-level 3.0 V6 engine, it is incredibly engaging, and of course, the Porsche badge carries a lot of value. Quality is similar to what you'll find in the others, with a far greater focus on sportiness in design. Some things to note are that many of the features standard on the other cars are optional on the Cayenne and will drive up the price, and a consequence of its sporty setup is a firmer ride quality and heavier steering, which might become tiresome in everyday use. Also consider the Range Rover Sport, which delivers the best of both worlds. It's engaging to drive while being comfortable, it's got a more luxurious edge than all the rest, and it's loaded up with features too.

โข3wI am confused between the Range Rover Velar and the Audi Q8. I am aware of the price difference and engine options. I would like an opinion on which one would be better for long-term ownership.

Autocar India
The two luxury SUVs belong to slightly different segments, with a roughly Rs 30 lakh price difference. That said, of the two, we would lean towards the Audi Q8 for long-run peace of mind in India. The Q8 tends to have fewer small issues as the years add up, its electronics feel better sorted, and the engine-gearbox feels very smooth even in slow traffic and in our heat. Audi also has a wider service reach in most cities, and parts supply is usually quicker, which matters when you want the car back on the road fast after a service or repair. Besides, you get a more powerful 6-cylinder engine and far more interior space. There are trade-offs. The Q8 costs a fair bit more and it is a large car to park in tight spaces. Running costs will be higher than the Velar, especially if most of your use is in the city. The Range Rover Velar is more of a style statement, inside and out, and while you miss out on a six-cylinder engine, what you do get is a diesel engine option.

โข5wHello, I am planning to buy a new car with a budget of around โน80 lakh. My priorities are safety, comfort, and performance. My usage will be evenly split between city driving and highway (long-distance) trips. I am currently considering the Mercedes-Benz GLC, BMW X3, and Land Rover Discovery Sport (despite higher maintenance, I understand it offers better performance). Could you please help me choose the right option?

Autocar India
For what you're after, the BMW X3 xDrive20d M Sport is the one that fits your brief best. It feels the most engaging to drive without giving up daily comfort, and it feels safe and steady at speed. The 2.0 diesel has strong pull for quick passes, the 8โspeed automatic shifts very smoothly, and the rear-biased xDrive AWD focuses on driving pleasure while still providing a safety net. In the city, it is easy to drive, the engine is quiet enough at low speeds, and visibility is good. You could also consider the new xDrive 30 petrol, which is even more exciting to drive, but we feel the trade-offs to mileage and ride comfort for your mixed usage mean the 20d still feels like the better bet.The Mercedes GLC has slightly softer suspension and a more luxurious interior, but is not quite as fun to drive. And the Land Rover Discovery Sport feels tougher and has the advantage of a small third row of seats, but it simply feels too dated and not as refined in this company. Overall, we would recommend the BMW X3 for you.

โข9wIs the JLR Discovery Sport HSE Diesel a mild hybrid?

Autocar India
Yes. The 2025 Land Rover Discovery Sport 2.0-litre Ingenium D200 diesel engine gets a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. It comprises a belt-integrated starter generator with energy recuperation and torque assist to improve drivability and efficiency.

โข10wI currently own a Land Rover Defender and really enjoy its styling and versatility. Lately, though, Iโve been wondering if there are SUVs that deliver a more premium and luxurious cabin experience. Iโve looked at the Range Rover Sport and the Lexus LX, but Iโm unsure if they would feel like a meaningful upgrade. What SUVs would you suggest for someone who wants luxury, comfort, and a strong road presence?

Autocar India
The Land Rover Range Rover Sport would be a good switch from the Defender. Where the Defender has rugged appeal, the Range Rover Sport is properly posh. The classy design stands out, and the minimalist interior has a very different vibe from the Defender.Other alternatives include the BMW X7 and Mercedes-Benz GLS. Further up the price ladder, there's the Mercedes-Maybach GLS and Range Rover. The Mercedes-Benz G-Class and Lexus LX are also big on price and presence, but are not as comfortable as the options listed above.

โข16wI am using an Endeavour 2.2 (2019) and now want to add a luxury car under โน1 crore. Which is the best option?

Autocar India
At under Rs 1 crore, the best luxury car you can buy is the Mercedes-Benz E-Class. With its long wheelbase, compliant suspension tuning and comfortable, reclining rear seats, it offers one of the best back-seat experiences on the market. And that aside, it's very well equipped and has a strong selection of petrol and diesel engines as well.If you'd prefer an SUV, the Range Rover Velar is also a good option, being stylish inside and out, with a cool, minimalist interior. If you want more space, the Audi Q7 offers three rows of seats and excellent value for money.

โข18wI am looking to buy an SUV to drive myself on the weekends but I am confused between BMW X7 and Mercedes GLS and Range Rover Sport

Autocar India
While the Mercedes-Benz GLS and BMW X7 are spacious, practical and big on road presence, since you will just be driving yourself on weekends, their added size holds no value and simply makes them more cumbersome. As such, we'd recommend the Range Rover Sport, which has the added benefit of greater snob value than the Merc or BMW. Both its straight-six engines - petrol and diesel - are powerful and refined; in fact, they sound really nice. And though this is a big car for a five-seater, it's reasonably fun to drive. Additionally, consider the Porsche Cayenne, which, though not quite as big and imposing as the Range Rover, is even more fun to drive.

โข20wI am looking for a 7-seater SUV with a budget of around โน70 lakh. Please suggest the best option, or should I wait for a year for more choices?

Autocar India
Rs 70 lakh is a substantial budget for a 7-seat SUV, but the sad reality is that there aren't too many options for the money. The charming Land Rover Discovery Sport is the closest in terms of price, but third-row space, comfort, and access are poor. You could look at options a few rungs down the price ladder. The Skoda Kodiaq, for one, is a great SUV that scores for its premium feel, but, again, third-row space isn't great. Likewise, Volkswagen Tayron, which will go on sale in the coming months, also promises a premium vibe but is unlikely to offer great room at the very back. If third-row space isn't critical, we'd suggest you look at the Skoda and Volkswagen cars. Another upcoming option is the MG Majestor, expected in 2026. It's a large SUV that promises generous space even for third-row passengers. The Majestor will be well-equipped, packing in lots of creature comforts, and the body-on-frame construction should also lend it a tough appeal. However, we will only be able to comment on the driving experience once we get behind the wheel of the SUV when it arrives in 2026.

โข21wI have been using a Skoda Superb car for the last few years. I am now planning to buy a new car. For some time now, I have developed knee pain. Considering this, would a SUV be better suited for me as compared to a sedan? Can you please also give me some recommendations for the car? My budget is up to โน75 lakh.

Autocar India
While you are advised to personally test the vehicles to judge comfort, a higher-riding SUV usually is more comfortable to get into and out of than a sedan. There are a fair few options within your budget (do remember to haggle hard!), among which we'd suggest you check out the BMW iX1, BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC, Audi Q5, Volvo XC60 and Land Rover Discovery Sport. You could also look at the Kia Carnival if you are open to the MPV body style.

โข21wHi, Iโm looking to buy a new car primarily for my dad, who will be chauffeur-driven to work, but on weekends and road trips, I will drive it. Iโm torn between the Lexus LM and the Range Rover HSE or Autobiography. I realize these are completely different vehicles, but neither my family nor I have been able to finalize a choice. Also, please share your insight on whether the petrol Autobiography is worth the โน30 lakh premium.

Autocar India
The Lexus LM and Land Rover Range Rover HSE are completely different vehicles. The Lexus LM is a fantastic chauffeur-driven car with a pair of rear seats that resemble a first-class cabin. We can see your father being very comfortable in the back seat, which has all amenities, and getting in and out of those sliding doors will be very easy. The Range Rover doesnโt have the same lounge-like cabin, but the back seat is fantastically comfortable too. Where the Range Rover noses ahead of the LM is with its far better ride quality and the sheer class it offers. An MPV, no matter how luxurious, somehow canโt match the status and image of an SUV. And lastly, for your weekend drives and road trips, the Range Rover drives much better than the LM.
