Maruti Suzuki Celerio expert review
We like
Easy to drive
Fuel economy
We don't like
Rear seat comfort not great
Pricier than rivals
The new Maruti Suzuki Celerio adopts a taller and more upright stance than before, giving it stronger road presence despite its compact footprint. The rounded body panels, wide grille and swept-back headlamps give it a friendly yet contemporary look. Short overhangs and a high roofline prioritise interior space, which has always been a key Celerio strength.
Built on Maruti Suzukiโs lightweight Heartect platform, the Celerio benefits from improved rigidity and reduced weight. Engineering focus is clearly on efficiency, ease of driving and urban usability rather than outright performance or sporty appeal.
6.0
The cabin is a noticeable step forward. The dashboard design is simple but modern, with a layered look and better perceived quality than the outgoing model. Controls are logically laid out and easy to reach, reinforcing the Celerioโs user-friendly nature.
Front seats are supportive enough for daily commuting, and the upright seating position improves visibility. Rear seat space is impressive for the segment, with good headroom and knee room for two adults. Three passengers at the back will feel tight, but that is expected at this size.
Boot space stands at 313 litres, which is generous for a compact hatchback and easily accommodates daily luggage or a weekend trip.
8.0
Power comes from Maruti Suzukiโs 1.0-litre, three-cylinder K10C DualJet petrol engine, paired with either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT. This engine feels eager at low speeds and suits city driving well, allowing the Celerio to keep up with traffic effortlessly.
Refinement is better than expected from a small three-cylinder motor. While the engine becomes audible when pushed hard, it remains smooth during normal driving, with minimal vibration filtering into the cabin. Highway cruising is relaxed at steady speeds.
The AMT gearbox prioritises convenience. It works smoothly in stop-start traffic but shows noticeable pauses between shifts when driven aggressively, which is typical of this type of transmission.
8.0
Fuel efficiency is the Celerioโs biggest highlight. As per the Autocar India review, the manual petrol is rated at 25.24kmpl, while the AMT petrol delivers an impressive 26.68kmpl, making it the most fuel-efficient petrol car in India at the time of launch.
These figures are achieved through the lightweight platform, improved aerodynamics and the efficient DualJet engine. In real-world conditions, the car feels capable of delivering excellent economy when driven sensibly.
8.0
Ride comfort has improved over the previous generation. The suspension absorbs bumps and broken surfaces well, especially at city speeds. The car feels pliant over potholes and speed breakers, which suits urban conditions perfectly.
Steering is light and easy, making the Celerio effortless to manoeuvre in tight spaces. At higher speeds, stability is adequate but not confidence inspiring, and body movements are noticeable if pushed hard. This remains a city-focused hatchback rather than a highway cruiser.
7.0
Feature highlights include a touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity, steering-mounted controls and keyless entry on higher trims. The instrument cluster is digital and easy to read.
Safety equipment includes dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors and seatbelt reminders as standard. The safety package meets segment expectations without offering any standout extras.
7.0
The new Celerio plays directly to its strengths. With excellent fuel efficiency, improved space, better ride comfort and easy drivability, it remains a sensible choice for city users and first-time buyers.
It does not aim to excite, but as a dependable, economical and practical hatchback, the Celerio delivers exactly what its target audience expects.

Trending Questions on Maruti Suzuki Celerio - Answered by Autocar Experts
Suggest a good automatic car petrol within 6 lakh.
I am planning to buy a new car under โน7 lakh. I am looking for a car with smooth engine performance and enhanced safety features.
We would recommend you look at the Maruti Suzuki Celerio. Refinement from the 1.0 litre engine is much better than you would expect from a three-cylinder engine, and minimal vibrations filter into the cabin.
The overall performance is smooth and easy for normal everyday driving, and at low city speeds, it even feels a bit eager, and it is thus quite enjoyable to drive. In terms of safety, the car is well equipped with safety features like 6 airbags, anti-locking brakes (ABS) and electronic stability program (ESP).
It also scored a three-star crash safety rating in the GNCAP test. You can get cars with a better crash rating, like the Tata Tiago, for instance, but you will not find the engine as smooth.
I own a Maruti Wagon R and have been driving it for the past 12 years. I prefer Maruti Suzuki or its other models. My budget is โน7-8 lakhs. I require that the seat height be similar to the Wagon R. Please suggest an alternative.
I am 72 years old. My driving is limited to only about 10 km per day in the city only. My budget is about 6 lakhs. I want to purchase an automatic hatchback small petrol car fit for city driving, and easy to drive with minimal fatigue. Earlier I have never drove automatic car. Please advice which car will be suitable for me. I have little weakness in my right leg.
We would recommend you to consider the Maruti Suzuki Celerio VXI AGS, which should fall within your budget. It is a tall hatchback, with good visibility all around, a light steering, and its petrol-automatic combination is smooth and efficient. Being a Maruti, it is likely to deliver a fuss-free ownership experience.
If you can increase your budget slightly, you could consider the Maruti Wagon R, which will be even easier to enter and exit the vehicle. Being a very popular model, its resale value will be stronger than the Celerio too.
I am 67 years old and currently drive a Maruti Alto LXi, which returns 13 kmpl. I want to upgrade to a car you would suggest. My usage is mostly city driving, around 1,200 km per month. My budget is โน8 lakh. Please advise.
I am planning to buy a car with a budget of โน7-8 lakh. I need it for my daily commute and for seating four people. I have no idea which car I should buy, as this will be my first car. Being a woman, comfort and good mileage are important to me.
We are planning to buy our first car under โน10 lakhs. I am new to driving and learned in a driving school. Once I become comfortable, I will train my father and brother to drive as well. We drive occasionally and are located in a rural area, with occasional trips to suburban (10-15 km) and urban (40 km) areas. I need a fuel-efficient, low-maintenance, and safe car. I am considering the Alto, Wagon R, or Punch. I plan to keep the car for more than 10 years. Please advise.
The Tata Punch is a good option for you. The car is small and, for new drivers, will be easy to manage. It also scores well on the safety front - which is one of your priorities - with a 5-star BNCAP crash rating.
However, since you are also looking for fuel efficiency, low maintenance and want to keep the car for more than 10 years, we think the Maruti Suzuki Celerio would be a good option. While it may not match the crash safety score of the Punch, it still managed a 3-star GNCAP rating, which is good given that you will not be using the car mainly on highways.
Moreover, it would better meet your requirements of fuel efficiency and low maintenance, something the Maruti Suzuki brand has consistently delivered on. Also, it is a car that is easy to drive and is quite spacious inside.
My monthly usage is around 500km, mostly suburban driving. Which car should I buy that is fuel-efficient and easy to maintain? My budget is Rs 6 lakh.
I am 42 years old and recently suffered a slipped disc, so I can no longer drive a manual car. I want to buy a used automatic car with a budget of โน3 to โน4 lakh that offers decent mileage. Please suggest.
I am looking for an automatic electric car under โน13 lakh. My daily commute is around 40km. Which EV should I buy?
