New Maruti Dzire vs Amaze vs Aura vs Tigor: specs and prices compared

SUVs continue to remain the favourite body type in the market, but in the last couple of weeks, Maruti and Honda have launched their new-gen compact sedans – Dzire and Amaze, respectively. Segment-first additions and crucial safety kit have made these arch-rivals more appealing, though Maruti continues to lead the sales charts. We pit them against each other, as well as the Tata Tigor and Hyundai Aura, to see how they stack up in terms of specs and pricing.

All these compact sedans follow the sub-4m rule to qualify for excise benefits. While the Hyundai Aura, Honda Amaze and Maruti Dzire have an identical length of 3,995mm, the Tata Tigor is slightly shorter at 3,993mm. The Dzire is the widest of the lot; 40mm wider than the next in line, the Amaze. The Tigor’s height, at 1,532mm, is the maximum here, while the Amaze’s is the shortest at 1,501mm.

The Honda Amaze leads the pack when it comes to wheelbase at 2,470mm, while the others' wheelbase is the same at 2,450mm. Furthermore, the Tigor is the heaviest with a 1,000-1,035kg kerb weight, depending on the variant. The Aura, Dzire and Amaze all weigh between 920kg and 960kg. As far as boot space is concerned, the Amaze offers maximum storage of 420 litres, while the Tigor has around 419 litres. The Dzire gets the smallest boot – 382 litres.

All four compact sedans are offered with a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, although the Dzire and Tigor have one cylinder less than the other two. A 5-speed manual gearbox is standard for all models; the Tigor, Dzire and Aura offer an AMT gearbox option, while the Amaze is the only one to offer a CVT gearbox. However, the Amaze is the only one that misses a factory-fitted CNG unit; it has to be retrofitted at dealerships. The Amaze has the highest power output of 90hp, but it is not the torquiest. That crown goes to the Aura (113.8Nm) and the Tigor (113Nm).

The Dzire, while the least powerful here with 82hp, is the most fuel-efficient compact sedan with its new Z Series petrol engine: it returns a class-leading 24.79kpl with the manual and 25.71kpl with the AMT.

We have only considered the ex-showroom prices of the petrol versions of these cars. The Tata Tigor’s price of Rs 5.99 lakh-8.39 lakh makes it the most affordable. Meanwhile, the Honda Amaze is the most expensive car here with introductory prices from Rs 8 lakh going up to Rs 10.90 lakh, ex-showroom. This mainly was a result of the deletion of the E and S variants as Honda wanted to project it as a premium car in the segment.
