Tata Nexon EV battery options explained

Tata Motors recently introduced a new 45kWh battery pack on the Nexon EV, taking the total battery count up to three. The other two are 30kWh and 40.2kWh. That’s the most offered by any EV in India, irrespective of their price point. This allows for a wide price band where one can opt for a specific variant depending upon their use case. Battery size and range aside, there are a few other key differences between the three variants. Let’s take a closer look.

Tata Nexon EV trims and features

The Nexon EV is available in six trims – Creative+, Fearless, Fearless+, Fearless+ S, Empowered and Empowered+. First up, the 30kWh MR variant is available on all but the top-spec Empowered+ trim, so it misses out on the larger 12.3-inch touchscreen that's limited to just the top trim. Conversely, the 40.2kWh LR variant is not offered on the base trim. For a detailed break-up of which variant offers what, refer to our story here.

Meanwhile, the new 45kWh battery is available right from the base to the top-end trim, so it covers all features across all the trims. It exclusively also gets a panoramic sunroof and a 12-litre frunk on the top Empowered+ trim.

    Tata Nexon EV exterior design

There aren’t any major differences in exterior design specific to the battery packs save for the wheels, which could be alloy or steel, depending on the trim. Also, the 40.2kWh and 45kWh variants can be had in the Dark Edition or Red Dark Edition on the top-spec Empowered+ trim; both are cosmetic packages that bring an all-black or red-and-black exterior and interior theme, respectively.

Tata Nexon EV range and specs

    ARAI-claimed range275km390km489km
    Power129hp145hp145hp
    Torque215Nm215Nm215Nm

Now, let’s talk about the all-important ARAI-claimed range for each of the battery packs: 275km for 30kWh, 390km for the 40.2kWh and 489km for 45kWh. So, if you are looking to buy a vehicle specifically for city use and do not mind missing out on a few feel-good features, even the 30kWh variant will be sufficiently up to the job. However, if you intend to use the vehicle for outstation trips, the 45kWh variant would be the most appropriate choice, although, given our charging infrastructure, you’ll still have to plan your charging stop on the route.

On Tata’s own internal test cycle which it calls the C75 test cycle, the Nexon EV returns a claimed real-world driving range of up to 230km, 310km and 370km for the 30kWh, 40.5kWh and 45kWh variants, respectively.

Do note that the base 30kWh variant is slightly less powerful at 129hp, while the other two variants produce 145hp; torque output for all three variants is the same at 215Nm.

    Variant30kWh40.2kWh45kWh
    PriceRs 12.49 lakh Rs 14.79 lakhRs 14.59 lakh – Rs 16.29 lakhRs 13.99 lakh – Rs 16.99 lakh

As you can see from the table above, the 30kWh and 40.5kWh variants are positioned quite distinctly, with barely any overlap in prices. However, the 45kWh variants, on account of being offered across the line-up, have a major price overlap with the other two battery packs.

The choice ultimately depends on your requirements. If you are buying specifically for city use, either of the smaller battery packs on a top-spec trim with all the feel-good features makes for a great value offering. However, if range is the utmost priority, the 45kWh battery would be the ideal pick.
