Kawasaki is preparing for the launch of a new retro motorcycle in the quarter-litre segment in Japan and it is named the W230. Following the design philosophy of other models in the W series by the Japanese manufacturer, the W230 embodies a classic aesthetic.

It showcases a minimalist design with features such as a circular LED headlight, dual analogue gauges with a digital display, and numerous chrome accents including the headlight bezel, exhaust pipes, handlebar, and more.

The motorcycle is predominantly white with a black stripe on the fuel tank and a two-tone seat cover. Additionally, the bike is seen with chrome-finished spoke wheels, further enhancing its retro appearance.

Even though the engine cases look widely different, it is speculated that the W230 is equipped with a 233cc single-cylinder engine based on the KLX230. Though specific power output details have yet to be disclosed, the KLX230’s motor produces 20hp at 8000rpm and 20.6Nm at 6000rpm for reference.

The motorcycle's suspension setup consists of gaitered telescopic front fork and dual rear shocks, while braking is managed by front and rear disc brakes with dual-channel ABS. These brakes are mounted on an 18-inch front and 17-inch rear spoke wheel.

The Kawasaki W230 exudes charm that is likely to attract a more mature audience, particularly enthusiasts of vintage motorcycle designs.India possesses a significant market potential for classic motorcycles, as evidenced by the sales figures of models like the Royal Enfield Bullet 350 and Classic 350.

Kawasaki initially launched the W175 at Rs 1.47 lakh but has since lowered it to Rs 1.22 lakh (ex-showroom, India). The bigger question is if Kawasaki plans to keep the W175 alongside W230 or replace it with the latter.

If Kawasaki India intends to introduce the W230 to the Indian market, it will need to competitively price the motorcycle, considering the established competitors in the segment such as the Royal Enfield’s 350cc range and Honda’s 350 range. Currently Kawasaki has only introduced the W230 for the Japanese market with no concrete details about its launch in India.
