  • Grand i10 Nios turbo-petrol delivers an ARAI-tested 20.3kpl

  • Fuel economy is only 0.4kpl down on 1.2-litre manual

  • It’s more efficient than the updated VW Polo GT TSI

The Hyundai Grand i10 Nios line-up expanded earlier this year, with the introduction of a sporty turbo-petrol offering. And there’s good news for buyers interested in one – it won’t burn a whole through your pocket in running costs, something that turbo-petrols are notorious for. The ARAI-tested figure for the Grand i10 Nios Turbo stands at 20.3kpl, which is not too much off the 20.7kpl figure of the entry version of the hatchback that comes powered by a 1.2-litre naturally-aspirated engine allied to a manual gearbox. However, if efficiency is your priority, you’d be best off with the Grand i10 Nios diesel, which delivers 25.1kpl in manual form.

At the moment, the Grand i10 Nios is the most affordable car in India with a turbo-petrol engine. The engine in question is the 1.0-litre, three-cylinder, turbo-petrol unit (same as the one in the Venue compact SUV) that produces 100hp and 172Nm of torque in the Nios and is paired to a 5-speed manual gearbox.

The Hyundai Grand i10 Nios turbo’s fuel economy also compares well with that of the other turbo-petrol of interest, the updated Volkswagen Polo GT TSI. Powered by a new 1.0-litre, turbo-petrol TSI engine and offered with a 6-speed manual gearbox, the updated GT TSI delivers 18.24kpl – 2kpl less than the Hyundai. The Polo does have the edge in power and torque with the engine producing 110hp and 175Nm of torque.
