Mahindra recently showcased its future line-up of BS6-ready petrol engines and announced that it will be ready to launch them by September 2019. The carmaker is now gearing up to expand this with the introduction of an all-new 2.0-litre petrol unit, with an aim to not just have a high-tech offering but also fortify its position among automakers with a strong petrol line-up.
The new 2.0-litre petrol engine will be an all-aluminum unit and is estimated to have an output of almost 185hp, and interestingly, will not use the same block as the diesel. According to sources, Mahindra engineers wanted to optimise the petrol unit and make it as light as possible. Just like its new range of 1.2-litre and 1.5-litre TGDI petrols, the new 2.0-litre unit will also be turbocharged.
Mahindra recently revealed that its high-tech TGDI systems currently use 250bar fuel-injection rail while the 350bar system will go into production next year. While it isn't confirmed, the 2.0-litre unit could use the high-pressure 350bar gasoline direct-injection system, with a focus on better endurance, improved performance and better refinement.
Having a competent line-up of petrols is getting increasingly important for Mahindra, which was known to have a diesel heavy portfolio, especially with the growing partnership and deeper collaboration with Ford as well as SsangYong.
In fact, at the event showcasing its future BS6 range, company MD Pawan Goenka said, "Mahindra was lacking a portfolio of globally competitive petrol engines in 2016. We were generally known not for our gasoline engines, but for diesel engines. However, we got a stamp of approval when both Ford and SsanYong decided they would want to use Mahindra’s new petrol engine in their vehicles, which means that we have managed to develop an engine that’s globally competitive."
Interestingly, the XUV300 petrol, which uses Mahindra's 1.2-litre turbocharged MPFI engine, accounted for 29 percent of total sales until March 2019.
