Mahindra’s Thar 5-door is scheduled to launch in the second half of 2024 and spy shots of the model have been circulating the internet for a while now. Along with some unique design elements to the exterior, the larger Thar will also get quite a few changes on the inside. More details about the upcoming SUV, for which Mahindra has trademarked seven nameplates, including Thar Armada, will surface when it launches. Until then, here’s what we know the Thar 5-door will get over over the 3-door model.
UPDATE: Mahindra Thar 5 door features revealed
- Thar 5-door to get more technology
- Increase in creature comforts confirmed
- Practicality also expected to rise
Mahindra Thar 5 door features, tech
While there weren’t major complaints about the Mahindra Thar 3-door’s equipment list, the carmaker will make sure that the 5-door version is perceived as more upmarket, befitting its larger size and higher price point. Here are seven features not available on the Thar 3-door that the upcoming SUV will get:
- 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment: First and foremost, various spy shots of the Thar 5-door’s interior have shown a dashboard that’s redesigned to accommodate a larger central infotainment screen. This unit, likely to be the 10.25-inch unit seen on the recently updated XUV400, will run on the latest Adrenox software and is expected to get OTA updates.
- 10.25-inch digital driver display: New images of the Thar 5-door's test mules have also shown that top-spec versions are likely to sport the large digital instrument cluster seen on the XUV700. Lower variants are expected to get analogue dials, albeit with a larger central MID from the Scorpio N.
- Dash cam: Higher trims are expected to get a dash cam, which is likely to have front and rear monitoring fuctions.
- Front armrests: The driver and front passenger will get individual armrests.
- Seating layout: Although spy shots have so far shown two individual seats for rear passengers, the 5-door is also likely to get a bench seat at the back to seat three in relative comfort.
- Rear seat improvements: Rear passengers will get dedicated AC vents, and those who opt for the bench seat will also get a rear centre armrest.
- Sunroof: A single-pane, powered sunroof will be offered on higher trims.
Mahindra Thar 5 door practicality
Considering the Thar 5-door’s wheelbase is 300mm longer than its 3-door counterpart, it’ll definitely be roomier for those in the rear. Interestingly, the larger SUV will also get a larger boot; with the rear seats up, the Thar 3-door’s boot is only adequate for a couple of small bags. Mahindra has also planned to incorporate more storage spaces and cubbies to improve utility. Finally, the company is also expected to use better quality materials inside the cabin, on the dash and doors, and even in terms of seat upholstery.
Mahindra Thar 5 door powertrains
The 3- and 5-door Mahindra Thars will share the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine and the 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine, with their respective 6-speed manual and automatic gearbox options. The off-road gear will also be shared between the two, but there will be tweaks to the 5-door model’s suspension, depending on the powertrain. Production is expected to begin by June this year, with Mahindra expecting to build around 4,000 units of the Thar 5-door, which may be called the Thar Armada, in a month.
