That Maruti and Toyota will be sharing the upcoming eVX SUV – with the latter brand showcasing the Urban SUV concept – much like the companies do at the moment with the Baleno-Glanza, Ertiga-Rumion and a couple of more models, is something we’ve report on before. We’re now told that the upcoming Maruti all-electric MPV, which is codenamed the YMC and is scheduled to launch in India by September 2026 as part of a launch blitz that's taking place over the next few years, will also have a Toyota-badged version on sale at a later date.

  1. Maruti projects production volumes of 50,000 for three-row YMC EV
  2. eVX, YMC production may hit 2.5 lakh per year, 2-3 years after launch
  3. Export of both EVs also expected to drive volumes

As the YMC MPV and eVX SUV will share the same Toyota-derived platform, along with the powertrain options, having Maruti and Toyota-badged versions of the SUV and MPV make business sense for both brands by expanding the economies of scale. Toyota's electric SUV based on the Urban SUV concept is expected to make its debut in 2025-26; considering the Maruti eVX prices are expected to be announced by March 2025, Toyota's derivative will arrive about 9-12 months after.

Maruti Suzuki expects the MPV to have a volume potential of over 50,000 units to 1 lakh units once it arrives late in 2026. Between the eVX and YMC, the company is eyeing combined production volumes of 2.5 lakh units per annum in a short span of 2-3 years of market launch, say people in the know. Speaking of the launch of Toyota's version of the YMC, prices for the electric MPV are expected to be announced about a year after the production-spec Urban SUV concept arrives.

“If all goes as per the plan, Maruti Suzuki may be the largest producer of EVs in the country by 2027-28. Not only will the upcoming SUV and MPV cater to the Indian market, but have very high export volumes. Plus the model will be shared with Toyota for the Indian market,” said one of the four people in the know of the development.
