The first product from MG’s upcoming product onslaught is expected to be the Cloud EV, a 4.3-metre-long vehicle resembling a cross between a large hatchback and an MPV. Recently, a heavily camouflaged test mule of the Cloud EV was spotted testing on Indian roads ahead of its imminent launch. Here’s what to expect.
MG Cloud EV exterior design
The Cloud EV has the typical stance and shape of an MPV, but it accommodates only five passengers across two rows, essentially resembling a larger hatchback. Its design is minimalist, with flush door handles, clean surfaces, and full-width LED light bars at both ends. Although it can’t be seen in these images here, the Cloud EV has a stepped front-end design with the headlamps mounted on the bumper, adding to its unique aesthetic. However, clearly visible are its large glasshouse wrapping seamlessly around the rear, extended quarter glass sections, and steeply raked front and rear windscreens.
MG Cloud EV interior, features
The interior follows a minimalist design with few physical buttons and controls Being a born EV, it has the interior packaging advantages allowing for lots of space. The dashboard features a large touchscreen infotainment system, a digital instrument cluster and front seats that can fully recline into a "sofa mode". AC vents are seamlessly integrated into a horizontal trim, while the door panels house distinctive circular speakers. It also has an ADAS suite with a 360-degree camera in international markets.
MG Cloud EV battery and range
The Cloud EV gets two battery pack options overseas: a 37.9kWh and a 50.6kWh, with 360km and 460km range, respectively. It’s powered by a front-axle mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor that produces 134hp, but it's yet to be confirmed which version will be made available here.
According to sources, MG aims to price the Cloud EV below Rs 20 lakh in India, which means it will find itself right in the thick of the EV market and rival the Tata Nexon EV and Mahindra XUV400. It will be more affordable than MG’s own ZS EV, which has been a steady seller for the brand. The key to an aggressive pricing for the Cloud EV will hinge on extensive localisation efforts, including that of the battery pack.
