In the lead-up to the debut of the all-new MG Comet EV on April 19, the company has released yet another teaser previewing the infotainment screen of the compact urban hatchback. This also gives us a first look at the complete dashboard of the Comet. As we have already reported, the Comet EV is based on the Wuling Air EV that’s sold in Indonesia and the interior, unsurprisingly, is quite similar to the latter.

  1. Comet EV will get dual 10.25-inch infotainment screens
  2. Steering wheel controls are inspired by Apple iPod
  3. Expected to be priced from around Rs 10 lakh

MG Comet EV interior revealed

The latest teaser image gives us a proper look at the dual 10.25-inch floating wide screens on the Comet EV – one serves as the infotainment screen while the other is a digital instrument cluster. MG says the infotainment screen will come with customisable widgets of different dimensions, and three fully customisable pages where users can toggle between navigation, connectivity and media seamlessly. The infotainment system will also feature voice commands.

The interior image also shows us the variety of materials used for the dashboard, all of which look quite premium. The dual screens are underlined by a solid aluminium trim, which also houses the slim, horizontal AC vents, and the dashboard seems to have a textured finish. Lower down, the HVAC controls – which are thankfully physical rotary dials unlike in the Hector, Hector Plus, Astor and ZS EV – are surrounded by a gloss black trim.

MG had previously also teased the two-spoke steering wheel with two control sets on each side. The round, multi-function buttons on the wheel are inspired by Apple’s iPod and will likely control audio, navigation and voice commands for the infotainment, among other functions. The simple, two-spoke design does complement the Comet EV’s minimalist interior theme rather well.

And while MG hasn’t revealed a detailed equipment list yet, the Comet EV will be positioned as a premium intra-city runabout, and MG will certainly not skimp on features. It’s expected to come equipped with connected car features, electric parking brake, hill-start assist, keyless entry and go, drive modes, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and voice commands, among others.

Being a born-electric vehicle, it will also have the packaging advantages such a platform offers, allowing for lots of space on the inside. However, due to its small footprint, it will strictly be a four-seater model.

MG Comet EV powertrain and range

The Comet EV is expected to be powered by a 20kWh battery, which will be locally sourced from Tata AutoComp. Our sources tell us that this could give the Comet EV a driving range of up to 250km that will likely be certified by iCAT, just like MG’s other electric car, the ZS EV. The Comet is expected to be powered by a single, rear-axle mounted motor with a power output of around 45hp-50hp.

MG Comet EV rivals, launch timeline

MG will reveal the Comet EV completely on April 19, with a price announcement expected sometime in May. Upon launch, it will compete with the Tata Tiago EV (Rs 8.69 lakh-11.99 lakh) and the recently launched Citroen eC3 (Rs 11.50 lakh-12.43 lakh) in the electric hatchback segment. The MG Comet EV will be assembled in India and MG plans to give it over 60 percent localisation to make it as competitive as possible. We expect the Comet EV to be priced between Rs 10 lakh-12 lakh, ex-showroom.
