Toyota has released a first official teaser for its upcoming Maruti Suzuki Baleno-based hatchback. The company has also announced that this new model will be called Toyota Glanza. The teaser shows the Toyota Glanza’s rear right fender, which confirms same alloy wheels as the Maruti Suzuki Baleno for the model, but with Toyota badging.
In an official statement, Toyota said, "We are happy to announce our entry into a new segment to cater to the growing demands of our existing and prospective customers. The name of the upcoming product, Toyota Glanza has been revealed to customers through our ‘Hatching Soon’ Teaser campaign today. Any further details on the product, variants, specifications and price will be shared at the official launch date."
As exclusively reported by us earlier, the Toyota Glanza will be sold with two variants upon launch, likely to be called the Toyota Glanza G and Toyota Glanza V. It will come with a 1.2-litre petrol engine mated to either a 5-speed manual or CVT, mostly on the top-spec trim. This means that the model will have a higher starting price than the Maruti Suzuki Baleno – which comes with more than two variants and multiple engine options.
The Toyota Glanza is expected to share all its sheet metal with the Baleno however there could be some changes expected to the model’s front styling. The model will also share complete interior bits with the Baleno apart from a few subtle touches.
What will separate the Glanza from the Baleno and make the car more attractive to buy will be a longer warranty. The Glanza is likely to come with a standard three-year/1,00,000km warranty, similar to what’s offered on other Toyota models in India. The Maruti Suzuki Baleno, for reference, comes with a standard two-year/40,000km warranty. The Toyota’s warranty will match Hyundai’s warranty on the i20, though it’s the Honda Jazz that gets a one-up on the others with its three-year/unlimited kilometre warranty.
Toyota is also likely to offer extended warranty plans with the Glanza hatchback, including the five-year True warranty package that can be opted within the period of standard manufacturing warranty, and the seven-year Toyota Timeless Warranty package, which can be purchased after the standard warranty is over.
The Toyota Glanza is the first product out of Toyota-Suzuki joint venture which will also see re-badged Maruti Suzuki models like the Ertiga, the Ciaz and the Vitara Brezza retail via Toyota dealerships in India, as well as in a few other international markets.
