Toyota Hyryder vs Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara: prices
The Hyryder also has a Maruti Suzuki derivate – Grand Vitara – and both brands took advantage of their respective technologies in terms of pricing. While Toyota earlier had a price advantage over Maruti Suzuki with the strong hybrid technology, Maruti Suzuki had a price advantage with the mild-hybrid and all-wheel drive (AWD) technologies.
This is not the case anymore since both the Hyryder and Grand Vitara strong hybrid models are now priced similarly. However, Toyota still has an advantage in this aspect as it offers this powertrain in three trims, while Maruti Suzuki only offers it in the top two trims.
After the hike, the mild-hybrid Hyryder continues to be priced higher than the Grand Vitara by up to Rs 50,000. Similarly, the AWD version of the Hyryder is Rs 30,000 dearer than the Grand Vitara AWD.
Toyota Hyryder: first strong hybrid midsize SUV in India
Toyota was the first manufacturer to introduce a strong-hybrid powertrain in the midsize SUV segment in India. It is powered by Toyota’s 1.5-litre TNGA Atkinson Cycle engine producing 92hp and 122Nm of torque, paired to an eCVT gearbox. The engine is mated to an electric motor churning out 79hp and 141Nm of torque, and combined, they produce 114hp.
The strong-hybrid system gets a 0.76kWh lithium-ion battery, and Toyota claims the strong hybrid has a fuel efficiency of 29.97kph. However, in our real-world efficiency tests, the Hyryder returned an efficiency of 22.85kpl on the highway and 20.28kpl in the city.
Toyota Hyryder hybrid: rivals
The Hyryder faces stiff competition from its cousin, the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara. It also rivals the soon-to-be-updated Kia Seltos, as well as the Hyundai Creta, Volkswagen Taigun, Skoda Kushaq and MG Astor.
