In the Top 10 utility vehicles (UVs) ranking for the January-November 2024 period, 90 percent of sales were marked by SUVs, with Tata Punch, Hyundai Creta and Maruti Suzuki Brezza coming first, second, and fourth, respectively. While the list ranges from sub-compact to midsize SUVs, the MPV segment is solely represented by the Maruti Ertiga, which came third. Notably, each UV has crossed the 1,00,000 threshold.

    1. Excluding Suzuki Ertiga, the rest are SUVs in the Top 10 table
    2. Four Maruti cars feature in the list
    3. Eight UVs have already gone past their total CY2023 sales

    Tata Punch

At the top, the Tata Punch stands with 1,86,958 units in the first 11 months of 2024, compared to a total 1,50,182 cars sold in CY2023. The SUV achieved its best monthly sales figure of 2024 in April (estimated at 19,158 units). Averaging nearly 17,000 each month, the Tata Punch is set to pass over 2,00,000 for the first time by December-end. The Punch also leads the charts in the April-November period of FY2025 with 1,32,995 cars, followed by the Hyundai Creta (1,29,365).

    Hyundai Creta

Ranked number 2, the Hyundai Creta registered dispatches of 1,74,311 models from January to November this year, retaining its best-selling midsize SUV title from CY2023. In October, 17,497 Cretas were sold, marking the nameplate’s best monthly wholesales of 2024. Hyundai launched the Creta facelift in January and will likely follow a similar timeline for the Creta EV in 2025, which will rival the Mahindra BE 6 and Tata Curvv EV.

    Maruti Suzuki Ertiga

The third-seeded Suzuki Ertiga boasted a 1,74,035 sales figure, which is 276 less than the Creta. In 2023, the Ertiga had a cumulative count of 1,29,968 units, which already translates into 44,067 more, while December sales are still to be counted. Ertiga noted its highest 2024 sales in August (18,580). This list’s sole MPV drove past the million-unit sales milestone in February, taking nearly 12 years since its 2012 launch.

    Maruti Suzuki Brezza

In the sub-compact SUV category, the Maruti Brezza was sold 1,70,823 times until November 2024. It is over by 235 units than Brezza’s CY2023 sales (1,70,588) but will likely breach that total significantly, which will be reflected in its CY2024 sales. Note that the Brezza was India’s top-selling UV last year, beating the Tata Nexon.

    Mahindra Scorpio

Combining the business of the Mahindra Scorpio N and Scorpio Classic, the brand noted 1,54,169 SUVs being sold from January to November 2024. Additionally, the Scorpio’s ranking went up to 5 from 7 in CY2023 (1,21,420), making for a 27 percent jump. This is Mahindra’s sole offering that could reserve a spot on the list. It also launched the Thar Roxx, BE 6 and XEV 9e SUVs this year.

    Tata Nexon

Falling four spots to number 6, Tata Nexon's 1,48,073 units are currently down by 22,239 units compared to CY2023’s 1,70,312. It is the first of the two cars in the Top 10 list not to have gone past its 2023 total. Interestingly, the Nexon was at number 1 in UV sales for two years in a row (2021 and 2022). Maruti Suzuki Fronx

The Maruti Fronx compact SUV, a new entrant, takes the number 7 position with 1,45,484 units. Ranked number 11 in CY2023 (94,393), the Fronx accounts for a 54 percent jump this year. In September, Fronx became the second Nexa SUV to achieve 2,00,000 sales after its larger Grand Vitara sibling.

    Maruti Grand Vitara

During the past 11 months to November 2024, the Maruti Grand Vitara (fourth listing from the brand) was dispatched 1,15,654 times. The Vitara, at number 8, has remained unmoved from its CY2023 ranking when it sold 113,387 units. From September 2022 (launch) to November 2024, Maruti has sold over 250,000 Grand Vitaras, 50,000 of which came during the last four months of this year.

    Hyundai Venue

Compared to CY2023, sales of the Hyundai Venue fell from 1,29,276 to 1,07,554 (January-November 2024), placing it three positions below at number 9. That also equates to a four-figure monthly sales average. After the Nexon, the Venue is the other SUV in this Top 10 list to have not surpassed its CY2023 sales. Considering its 2024 sales so far, the compact SUV is unlikely to beat its previous year’s total sales.

    Kia Sonet

Lastly, the Kia Sonet SUV is another new entrant, with 1,03,353 units sold in the first 11 months of 2024. In CY2023, the Sonet was at number 13 (79,776 units) and has replaced the Kia Seltos (1,04,891). Though it is behind by Seltos’ cumulative 1,538 units last year, it is slated to go beyond that considering its monthly average sales.
