At MotoSoul 2024, TVS has revealed a brand-new 300cc engine, which is called the RT-XD4.

  1. 299cc engine rated for 35hp, 28.5Nm of torque
  2. 6-speed gearbox on offer with slipper clutch
  3. Features both liquid-cooling and air/oil-cooling

New TVS 300cc engine details

TVS’ latest engine displaces 299c and is both liquid-cooled (for the head) and air/oil-cooled (for the crank cases). This new engine is rated for 35hp at 9,000rpm and 28.5Nm at 7,000rpm. Bore and stroke figures stand at 78mm x 62.6mm, respectively and TVS insists this is a brand-new engine. For reference, the Apache RTR 310’s 312cc motor has bore and stroke figures of 81mm x 62.1mm.

The immediate question that comes to mind with the capacity of this engine is why it is so close to the existing 310 engine manufactured by TVS and used in both TVS and BMW products. While the specifications are very similar to the existing 310, this is in fact an all new engine as can be seen in the bore and stroke figures and the overall design on the engine. That being said, the power and torque figures are quite close to the 310 engine which produces 35.6hp and 28.7Nm in the TVS Apache RTR 310.

TVS believes that there is large untapped potential in the 300cc space which is why it has made this motor. Moreover, this is just the first glimpse at what will be a new platform of vehicles that will come through in time. The first bike that will be using this engine will be out in the next few months but there will also be engines of different capacities based on this platform in the future.

With their own in-house engine, TVS will also have more cost advantages and it also future proofs them in this space. We are given to understand that the 310 engine will continue on sale but its long term future is unknown. After all, this engine has been in use since 2016 and BMW recently showed off a new 450cc parallel twin concept that is expected to be production ready soon.

This engine is mated to a 6-speed gearbox and a slipper clutch too. It isn’t yet clear if TVS will offer a quickshifter on future models powered by the RT-XD4. This new engine has thoroughly modern architecture with features such as dual overhead camshaft, a plasma-coated cylinder and dual cooling jackets inside the cylinder. While all this is rather complex technology to explain in this story, TVS claims that the engine has a very flat torque curve, which should make riding in the real world quite effortless. The first bike to be powered by the RT-XD4 should be launching quite soon and in fact, TVS has even filed a trademark for the name Apache RTX.
