2018 Mahindra Mojo UT 300 vs rivals: Specifications comparison

Mahindra Two Wheelers finally launched a cheaper variant of the Mojo in the Indian market. The new motorcycle, christened Mojo UT 300 (Universal Tourer), was spotted testing over the past few years. By slashing the price of the Mojo, Mahindra has been able to make its tourer offering more accessible to two-wheeler enthusiasts. The Mojo UT faces competition from the Bajaj Dominar 400, Royal Thunderbird 350X and the UM Renegade Sport S. So how does it stack up against its competition on paper? We get you the answer.

Design & features
The styling of the Mahindra Mojo UT is similar to the more premium Mojo XT 300 (Extreme Tourer), which made its debut a few years ago. The styling of the Mojo can be termed 'polarising' as it has received divided opinion from two-wheeler enthusiasts. What one cannot discount is the fact that the Mahindra Mojo does have a presence. To cut cost, the Mojo UT 300 misses out on LED DRLs, a dual exhaust muffler, and dual-tone colour option, as seen on the XT 300. The Royal Enfield Thunderbird 350X is a more urban and modern take on the standard Thunderbird 350.

The blacked-out theme, in conjunction with the bright shades the bike is offered in, does make the make the new 350X look appealing. It’s also the only RE bike on sale to come with factory fitted alloy wheels and tubeless tyres. The Bajaj Dominar 400 has the most modern and edgy styling in this group. It also is the only bike here to feature all-LED headlamps, backlit switches, and an all-digital instrument console. The styling of the UM Renegade Sports S has been inspired by the Suzuki Intruder and the bright colour does endow it with likable visual presence.

Power struggle
Powering the Mahindra Mojo UT 300 is the same 295cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled motor as seen on the Mojo XT 300. As a cost-cutting measure, fuel injection has been given a miss, and the power figure stands at 22.7hp at 7,500rpm and 25.2Nm at 5,500rpm (26.8hp and 30Nm on the Mojo XT). The KTM-sourced 373cc, liquid-cooled engine on the Bajaj Dominar 400 pumps out 34.3hp and 35Nm of peak torque, which makes it the most powerful motorcycle in this comparison, by a fair margin.

The Dominar 400 also features a six-speed gearbox and slipper clutch. Powering the Thunderbird 350X is a 346cc, single-cylinder motor that produces 20hp and 28Nm of peak torque. The RE offering is also the only bike in this comparison to come with a five-speed transmission. The 279cc, liquid-cooled mill on the UM Renegade Sports S makes 24.8hp and 23Nm of torque.

Underpinnings
To keep cost low, the Mahindra Mojo UT 300 loses out on USD front forks and Pirelli Diablo Rosso II tyres, which were offered on the XT 300. The Bajaj Dominar 400 leads the charge in this department as it gets perimeter frame, huge 320mm disc brake at front, and dual-channel ABS is offered as an option. The Mojo UT and the Dominar 400 get equipped with monoshock suspension, while the Thunderbird 350 and the Renegade Sports S features twin shock absorbers.  

The Renegade Sport S is the only bike in this comparison that misses out on a rear disc brake. The Mahindra Mojo UT is the lightest motorcycle in this group at 163.5kg, while the Thunderbird 350X is the heftiest at 196kg. The Mojo leads the charge with a fuel tank capacity of 21 litres, followed closely by the RE offering 20 litres, while the Dominar 400 has the smallest tank at 13 litres.

Pricing
In terms of pricing, the Mahindra is the cheapest offering in this comparison, carrying a price tag of Rs 1.49 lakh. The Bajaj Dominar 400 is offered in two variants – the base version is priced at Rs 1.42 lakh, while the ABS variant carries a sticker price of Rs 1.56 lakh. The new Royal Thunderbird 350X retails for Rs 1.56 lakh, a premium of around Rs 7,000 over the standard Thunderbird 350. At Rs 1.64 lakh, the UM Renegade Sport S is the most expensive bike in this shootout.
