BMW X1 launched in India at Auto Expo 2016
BMW has launched the all-new X1 SUV at the Auto Expo 2016. The second-generation X1 is priced from Rs 29.9 lakh to Rs 39.9 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) and will be only be available with a diesel engine until the second half of this year when a petrol option will be introduced.

Unlike its predecessor, the new X1 is designed to look more SUV than a jacked-up estate. This X1 has evolved to 4,439mm in length, 1,821mm in width and 1,598mm in height, which makes it 36mm shorter, 21mm wider and 53mm taller than the outgoing model, thus increasing cabin space and improving overall presence. The wheelbase has also been increased by 90mm. The more compact transverse engine layout that replaces the earlier model's longitudinal arrangement enables improved safety credentials.

The increased wheelbase in the new X1 has been attributed to BMW’s new UKL1 front-wheel-drive platform. The UKL1 platform also underpins cars from sister-brand Mini.

BMW is expected to launch the all-new X1 in India soon. For India, the X1 will most likely be available with BMW’s 189bhp, 2.0-litre diesel motor, eight-speed automatic gearbox and will also get an xDrive all-wheel drive.

The new X1 uses more components made from hot-formed high-strength steel and aluminium within the main body structure. It also incorporates tailored bland steel for the front bulkhead and B-pillars, and features an aluminium bonnet.

The BMW X1 may have been the model that introduced the compact luxury SUV segment in India, but over the years, with rivals like the Mercedes-Benz GLA and Audi Q3, competition has been tough. This new model could just change that.

The company has also unveiled the all-new 7-series luxury sedan and showcased the recently launched, updated 3-series sedan at the Auto Expo 2016 as well.
