Toyota has unveiled a new range of fuel-efficient engines that promise to achieve fuel efficiency improvements of at least 10 percent over current vehicles.
One of the new engines is a 1.3-litre petrol, which runs the Atkinson cycle, typically associated with hybrid engines. As Toyota explains, "Use of the Atkinson cycle provides an increased expansion ratio and reduces waste heat through a high compression ratio (13.5), resulting in superior thermal efficiency." This new engine has also been equipped with a distinctive intake port and the carmaker claims it will be 15 percent more frugal than current motors.
The manufacturer also unveiled a 1.0-litre engine jointly-developed with Daihatsu. This engine does not use the Atkinson cycle but is equipped with a similar intake port along with a cooled EGR system and a high compression ratio. All this, along with start/ stop technology and "various other fuel consumption reduction technologies," makes this engine up to 30 percent more fuel-efficient than current models, says Toyota.
Toyota has announced that these engines will be used in upcoming models and is expected to introduce 14 new engine variations by 2015.
