While the Volkswagen Passat sedan has become a thing of the past internationally, the carmaker has revealed an all-new model in China. The latest-gen Passat, now known as the Passat Pro, was recently showcased at the Chengdu Motor show. The sedan will be built by SAIC-VW and FAW-VW, and be called the Passat Pro and Magotan, respectively.
- Passat Pro sedan is over five metres long
- Gets a 2.0-litre TSI petrol
- Gets three screens and ADAS, among other features
Volkswagen Passat Pro highlights
The Passat Pro gets similar front styling as the Passat Wagon sold in Europe, but that’s where the similarities end. The Passat Pro sedan gets a longer wheelbase than the Wagon and gets completely different looks that are in line with newer VW SUVs like the India-bound Volkswagen Tayron.
The Passat Pro is a properly large sedan – it measures over five metres long and has a generous 2,871mm wheelbase, which is even more than the Toyota Camry sedan. The FAW-VW Magotan has a similar wheelbase, but is slightly shorter in length.
On the inside, the Passat Pro gets a digital cockpit setup, a 10.3-inch instrument cluster, a centrally placed 15.0-inch infotainment screen, and a third screen measuring 11.6 inches placed in front of the front passenger. Furthermore, it gets augmented reality equipped head-up display, a 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio system and ADAS setup that's developed by Drone maker DJI.
It also gets unique “cloud feeling” seats that are electrically adjustable, and come with heating, cooling and massage functions for the front and rear passengers. It also gets a 30-colour ambient lighting setup and in-car fragrance system.
As for the powertrain, the Passat Pro comes with a 2.0-litre TSI turbo-petrol engine good for 217hp and 350Nm that's mated to a 7-speed DSG gearbox. The sedan might get a lower-spec 1.5-litre TSI petrol at a later stage, but there are no talks of any type of electrification on offer.
The Passat Pro is a China-only model and will not launch in India. However, the Tayron SUV, with which it shares its design language, features and platform bits, will come to India sometime next year.
