Aston Martin has taken the covers off its new race car for the 2023 Formula 1 season. As is the case with all F1 launches, the cars we see at launch are seldom what will make it to track for the first race of the season, with teams looking to keep design secrets under wraps for as long as possible. But Aston Martin has called the AMR23 a “considerable evolution” of last year’s car, and a closer look already reveals some big changes.

  • Aston Martin say they have improved AMR23 “in every area”
  • Alonso to drive alongside Stroll

Aston Martin AMR23 updates

While former Red Bull aero chief Dan Fallows joined Aston Martin in April 2022, the AMR23 is the team’s first car that he’s been involved in the development of since the very start. The sidepod and engine cover bear a striking resemblance to last year’s championship-winning Red Bull.

Aston Martin says it has “heavily revised” the front wing as well. There’s also a new flatter, slimmer nose. "The design team was adamant that it wanted to tackle these regulations without compromise," said technical director Dan Fallows. "We want to move up the grid and start challenging the teams at the front – and you can't do that by sitting back and being conservative."

"AMR23 is a significant development of the car we refined in the latter half of 2022 – and we have improved it in every critical area. It optimises the solutions we felt would offer us the most performance, and it embodies the joint vision we have embraced and have built together over the recent months. Now we need to focus on delivering an ambitious yet efficient programme of updates for the first race and across the remainder of the season."

The car also carries a special logo on the nose, celebrating the Aston Martin brand’s 110th anniversary.

Last year, Aston Martin finished seventh in the constructors’ championship, equal on points with Alfa Romeo. Now in the third year of their F1 return, the team says the aim is to “deliver a car that will be competitive from the outset.”

Aston Martin also has a new driver line-up this year. While Lance Stroll stays on, two-time F1 champion Fernando Alonso joins the team in place of Sebastian Vettel. "I have always said that I could see the ambition that shines bright at AMF1. And, as we launch the car in this brand-new factory, I think everyone can now see the scale of the ambition and determination at the heart of this organisation,” added Alonso.

"Just as important is the car – and the AMR23 looks incredibly neatly packaged and highly efficient. I was pleasantly surprised when I sampled last year's car for the very first time, and I think there is plenty of performance we can unlock together. I can't wait to get started."

The AMR23 will take to the track for the first time on February 15 for a filming day in Silverstone. Official pre-season testing starts on February 23 in Bahrain.
