The Bajaj Dominar 400 was spied on the outskirts of Pune sporting some substantial upgrades. Bajaj’s flagship motorcycle is set to feature more equipment than before, which will make it a tempting proposition for buyers.
The most notable change on the new Dominar is the addition of a USD fork that will enhance the bike’s handling and suspension characteristics. However, it is currently unknown if Bajaj is using their own USD fork or borrowing it from the KTM Duke range. The Dominar’s low-speed ride comfort, which is currently a little too firm, is also believed to be worked on by Bajaj. The spy shots also reveal a new pseudo, twin-exhaust end can and a redesigned, larger-looking radiator.
The Dominar will continue to use the present bike’s slipper clutch-equipped 6-speed gearbox. While ABS was optional on the existing model, the update will get it as standard in order to comply with the mandatory ABS rule that will be instituted on two-wheelers. It'll be interesting to see if Bajaj continues to offer the dual-channel system that is currently an option on the Dominar, or whether it will move to a single-channel system to keep costs down.
We expect the upcoming Dominar to also feature a DOHC motor as seen on the KTM 390 Duke. This will ensure that the bike’s top-end performance gets even better without affecting the smooth and easy low-speed mannerisms of the bike. The switch to DOHC may also help the Dominar to achieve BS-VI compliance to clear the upcoming emission norms without sacrificing on performance.
Currently, the Bajaj Dominar is powered by a 373cc single-cylinder engine which puts out 34.5hp and 35Nm of torque. The updated motorcycle is expected to receive a bump in power and torque figures, though we expect that it will remain well clear of the 390 Duke’s class-leading numbers.
The upcoming Dominar is also expected to come in new paint shades, and given all the additional kit and technology that it will pack, it may cost about Rs 15,000 more than the present model. At an estimated price of Rs 1.80 lakh (ex-showroom), the Dominar will competed against the KTM 250 Duke, Honda CBR 250R and the Royal Enfield Classic 500.
