Yamaha has unveiled a new automatic gearbox called 'Y-AMT', which allows riders to choose between three distinct shift modes: Manual, Automatic (D+) and Automatic (D).

Similar to Honda’s DCT variants, riders can manually shift gears using a see-saw switch on the left-hand side. By using the plus or minus lever, riders can shift gears seamlessly without needing to use a clutch or their left foot. Yamaha has also enabled riders to use only the plus lever: pull for upshifts and push for downshifts, aiming to help them maintain grip on the handlebar and eliminate the need to use their thumb.

In automatic mode, ‘D+’ is the more aggressive mode and will result in harder acceleration and the gearbox will hold each gear for longer, while 'D' is a more relaxed one similar to comfort settings in cars.

These modes can be changed using a dedicated 'Mode' button for ease of use. Yamaha claims it will introduce this gearbox across multiple models to enhance rider focus and reduce overall fatigue.

Earlier this year, BMW teased their version of an automatic gearbox called “Automated Shift Assistant (ASA)”. KTM and Yamaha have also teased an AMT gearbox for their upcoming models. In contrast, Honda has been offering a fully automatic DCT for over a decade across multiple models.
