Chakan-based Bajaj Auto has filed a trademark application for the name Darkstar. The company filed the paperwork last month and it has passed the formalities check but it is yet to be approved.

    • Darkstar name could be used for ICE or EV model
    • Bajaj has five other names lying unused

The Darkstar trademark application joins many past applications such as the Dynamo, Blade, Twinner, Pulsar Elan and Pulsar Eleganz, which Bajaj Auto owns the rights to but are lying unused. According to the trademark application, Bajaj has reserved the rights to use the Darkstar name on either a future bike or scooter. In addition, since Bajaj is also a manufacturer of three-wheelers, it has also reserved the right to use it on a three-wheeled product.

The Darkstar trademark application also reveals the fact that this moniker could also be used on a future powerplant, either ICE or electric, which might underpin future models. As is typical for these trademarks, there are scarcely any details available and only time will tell if this nameplate even makes it onto a production-ready Bajaj offering. Recently, it came to light that Bajaj also owns the rights to the Vincent (a storied motorcycle maker of days past) name in the UK, but since then there’s been radio silence.
