India Yamaha Motor has announced a voluntary recall of around 3,00,000 units of its Ray ZR 125 Fi Hybrid and Fascino 125 Fi Hybrid scooters manufactured between January 1, 2022 and January 4, 2024, with immediate effect. The recall is “aimed at resolving an issue with the brake lever function” in select units of both the 125cc scooters, the company said. It added that the replacement part will be provided to the customers affected free of charge.

To verify the eligibility for the recall, owners of these Yamaha scooters have to log into the Service section of the India Yamaha Motor website, navigate to the ‘SC 125 Voluntary Recall’ and enter their Chassis No. details to know the next steps. They can also visit the nearest Yamaha service centre or contact India Yamaha Motor at the toll-free number – 1800-420-1600 – for further assistance.

    Two-wheeler recalls in India

At around 3,00,000 units for the two scooters, this constitutes the largest recall by India Yamaha Motor as yet. Since SIAM’s Code of Voluntary Recall came into effect in July 2012, the company has recalled a total of 63,977 units. The company has previously recalled 56,082 Cygnus Ray scooters in July 2013, 138 R1 motorcycles in March 2014 and 7,757 FZ150 bikes in December 2019. Yamaha's total recalls in India now stand expanded to 3,63,977 units.

From an industry perspective, this is the second largest recall by an Indian two-wheeler OEM, following the May 2021 recall by Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India for 6,15,666 units (comprising the Activa 5G/6G/125, CB Shine, CB 300R, H'ness CB350, X-Blade and Hornet).
