We first spied the Peugeot 2008 in India last year, and we now have fresh images that shows a second test mule on our roads. The test car was seen on the Mumbai-Pune expressway by Firoze Irani.

The 2008, already on sale in global markets, is likely being used as a test bed in India. The SUV is underpinned by sister company Citroen's CMP platform, which also forms the basis for the upcoming C3.

The shared platform would make the Peugeot ideal for testing engine, gearbox and other components for the upcoming Citroen model. Both models get a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine, which could likely be powering this SUV.

Additionally, Citroen also manufacturers engines and gearboxes for international markets at its facility in Hosur, Karnataka. The model could, therefore, also be a test bed for powertrain development, including performance testing under various climatic and road conditions.

    Stellantis’ plans for India

As of now, Stellantis’ focus in the Indian market has been on Jeep and Citroen, with no plans yet to relaunch the Peugeot brand.

Citroen is set to launch its first made-in-India car, the C3, in 2022 with plans also underway to develop a compact SUV. Jeep, meanwhile, is readying for the launch of three new models. The Compass Trailhawk is set to return in the coming weeks – the variant was discontinued when the facelift was launched. Also due to arrive in the coming months is the new Jeep Meridian and the new Grand Cherokee. The latter, unlike its predecessor, is expected to be locally assembled with only the five-seater model expected to make it here.
