After a long period of silence from the brand, Nick Collins, executive director, vehicle programmes, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), has outlined future plans for Jaguar. Speaking to our sister publication, Autocar UK, Collins highlighted how the company plans to reinvent itself.

  • Upcoming new Jaguars to be based on bespoke architecture
  • Special-edition F-Type to be brand's last V8 powered sportscar
  • New concept car reveal likely before 2024

Three brand new EVs coming in 2024

Part of the plan is to unveil three brand-new EVs based on a new platform. Collins admitted that re-establishing a brand like Jaguar is a huge task but added that the marque is exactly where it wants to be. Collins stated that the brand's prolonged silence on its future plans was a deliberate decision and they decided to concentrate on the global launches of the new Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, and the Defender 130. However, he said that work on the new Jaguars has been in full force with a highly dedicated team behind it.

Collins stated that the models will be shown to the public in 2024, with deliveries set to commence a year later. “We are still working on options for communicating and marketing the vehicles. We have plenty of ideas but we haven’t decided which way to go,” he added.

Lower variants, special editions for existing portfolio

He also shed some light on what Jaguar plans to do with their existing range of cars, and referred to it as “curating the journey” to 2025. Collins said the ongoing supply chain issues have created many opportunities for Jaguar to dial down the number of variants. Moreover, Jaguar will be doing more models like the F-Pace SVR Edition 1988, including the XE and XF models.

“Next year, we will celebrate the 75th anniversary of Jaguar sportscars by doing something special with the F-Type. It will be our last V8 sports car,” he added.

New car designs in final phase of development

All the designs in the new portfolio have been signed off and Jaguar is currently in the final maturation phase, readying the cars for production by focussing on technical aspects like aerodynamics and cooling. Collins hinted that there would be very few changes to the designs of the production model. “We see our task as being to bring great designs to life,” he added.

Collins said that they might show a concept car before 2024, but added that they would have to “reimagine” how they do it.

New Jaguars to have bespoke architecture

Jaguar was previously looking at using a partner platform for their cars but has now decided to go with its own bespoke architecture. “However, we are using some of the building blocks that we already have – and have planned for other future models – to streamline the process,” Collins said.

The upcoming Jaguar models will be based on a new architecture for both body and chassis. They will also have new powertrains, a new production system, and a new marketing proposition targeted at a new set of buyers. Collins admitted that there are risks involved in this but so are opportunities. “We had to do something very different, just as we did with the Defender, and that’s what we’re doing.”

Prices for the new models will not be decided right now. Collins said that Jaguar is sure of how it wants to position its cars. “My own view is that a great product defines its own pricing. How much we can charge is down to the quality of the job we do,” he said.
