Updated: Jeep Compass gathers 1,000 bookings

Jeep has started accepting bookings for its upcoming SUV, Compass, in India. The Compass, as reported earlier, will be Jeep’s first 'Made in India' model to be manufactured at FCA’s Ranjangaon plant. Jeep is also accepting bookings on its website, as well as at dealerships.

Jeep will sell the Compass in India in five variants with five exterior paint shades to choose from. The SUV will be powered by a 2.0-litre, 172hp diesel motor mated to a six-speed manual transmission. The second engine on offer will be a 1.4-litre,MultiAir turbo petrol engine from Fiat good for 162hp. This engine will come with a six-speed manual as well as a seven-speed automatic gearbox.

However, sources tell us that the Compass will initially be sold only in a diesel MT configuration. A diesel AT (nine-speed auto), along with the petrol engine (with both gearboxes) will join in at a later stage. The Compass will be sold in India with both 2WD and 4WD configurations, depending on the variant.

All Jeep Compass variants in India will feature 60:40 split rear seats and will come with as many as six airbags. The company has claimed that, with more than 50 safety and security features such as electronic stability control, anti-lock braking system and dynamic steering torque. As far as features go, the higher-spec variants of the Jeep Compass are set to have 7.0-inch Uconnect infotainment system loaded with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Kevin Flynn, president and managing director, FCA India, said, "We have pulled out all the stops to deliver the highest quality standard on the Jeep Compass and we are here to set a benchmark in the Indian SUV space.''

Key rivals to the Jeep Compass are the Hyundai Tucson, Ford Endeavour, Toyota Fortuner and the recently launched Volkswagen Tiguan SUVs. The Compass is likely to be priced in the range of Rs 18 lakh for the base trim, going up to Rs 25 lakh for the top-spec variant.
