Mahindra has launched a downsized version of its mHawk diesel engine in light of the recent ban imposed in Delhi on diesel vehicles over 2,000cc. The engine, a 1.99-litre mHawk unit, will be first available on the XUV500 and Scorpio.
The decrease in engine capacity has been achieved primarily by reducing the stroke of the engine. It now develops 140bhp as opposed to 138bhp in the XUV500 and 120bhp as opposed to 118bhp in the Scorpio. Mahindra stated that the downsizing of the mHawk range had started as early as August 2014.
The Scorpio is available in six variants and comes with the choice of a six-speed manual and automatic gearbox, as well as optional 4WD. The XUV500 offers four variants with a choice of a six-speed manual and automatic gearbox, with the option of AWD on some trims.
The XUV500 is priced from Rs 11.47 to Rs 17.37 lakh, while the Scropio is priced from Rs 9.05 to Rs 14.61 lakh (all prices ex-showroom, Delhi), for the 2.2-litre variants. Mahindra has not yet announced the prices for the 1.99-litre models.
Both these models with the new downsized engines are on sale only in Delhi and NCR for now.
