Mercedes-Benz has launched its flagship super sports car for the Indian market, the SLS AMG. The car was first displayed at the Auto Expo in January. The car sports a puristic sports car design on the exterior complemented by aviation-inspired interior designs.
In terms of technology, the car is powered by a modified AMG 6.3-litre V8, equipped with an AMG speedshift DCT 7-speed sports transmission, AMG speed-sensitive sports steering and the light yet rigid aluminium space frame. The SLS AMG is the first independently developed vehicle by AMG in its illustrious history that spans over 40 years.
India is among the first right-hand-drive markets to launch the Gullwing within the first few weeks of its production (first RHD production: June 2010).
In the luxury segment, only Audi has introduced its R8 as a CBU. Even as Audi has stolen the thunder from its rivals in the luxury segment by launching a slew of luxury SUVs, the launch of the SLS AMG is clearly an attempt to boost the Mercedes brand in the market at a time when the Audi has turned the heat on its rivals.
Depending on how the car is configured, prices could start at Rs 2 crore, say company sources.
