Tata Motors has launched an updated version of the all-electric Tigor compact sedan. While a larger battery pack and longer range are the main technical enhancements, the updated Tigor EV also holds the distinction of being the first electric car from Tata to be made available to private buyers. However, do note, there is a big difference in Tigor EV prices for private and commercial buyers. And that’s because the subsidies under the government’s FAME II scheme are only applicable to the cars sold for commercial use.

The Tigor EV is available in three variants – XE+, XM+ and XT+ – with prices starting at Rs 9.44 lakh for commercial buyers, and Rs 13.09 lakh for private buyers.

The extended range Tigor EV comes with an ARAI-certified range of 213km, which is significantly higher than the 142km range of the standard Tigor EV. The 50 percent improvement in range comes from the incorporation of a 21.5kWh battery pack in place of the earlier 16.2kWh system. AC charging and DC fast charging are part of the package. As before, the model is powered by a 72V, 3-phase AC induction motor that makes 30kW (41hp) at 4,500rpm and 105Nm of torque at 2,500rpm. The power is channeled to the front wheels via a single-speed gearbox, though Tata has added driving modes – namely Drive and Sport – to the Tigor EV.

In terms of equipment, the top-spec XT+ gets a 2-DIN audio system by Harman with Bluetooth, USB and AUX connectivity, 14-inch alloy wheels, height adjustable driver’s seat, a shark-fin antenna and LED tail lamps. Standard safety features include dual airbags (XE+ gets only driver side airbag) and ABS. The updated Tigor EV can be had in the same three paint shades as the older model – Pearlescent white, Egyptian blue and Roman silver.

The new Tigor EV is available in 30 cities across the country. Tata is also offering a standard warranty of 3 years/1,25,000km on the sedan. In terms of rivals, the Tata Tigor EV competes with Mahindra Electric’s e-Verito.

The updated Tigor EV’s launch comes weeks after Tata Motors announced details of its Ziptron electric vehicle technology. Tata has also started a campaign around the all-electric version of the Nexon that will be the first model to feature its Ziptron technology.
