2019 Toyota Supra details leaked

Styling and some statistics of upcoming sports car appear to have been leaked by Japanese media: 1,496kg, 340hp, 0-100kph in 3.8sec; carmaker won't confirm if they're legitimate.

Statistics of the 2019 Toyota Supra were leaked in the Japanese magazine ‘Best Car’. The leak shows the full styling of Toyota’s forthcoming sports car, which is returning after an absence of 16 years. The styling of the motorsport-themed concept heading for the Geneva motor show, next month, is also shown. The images of the Best Car pages first appeared on fan site SupraMkV.com.

If the leak is to be believed, the new Supra will be 4,380mm long, 1,855mm wide, 1,290mm tall and will have a wheelbase of 2,470mm. This is 140mm shorter, 45mm wider, 15mm taller and 80mm shorter than the previous Supra of 1993.

At 1,496kg, the new car is also 14kg lighter than the previous Supra and 250kg heavier than the Toyota GT86.

The Supra's engine, according to the leak, is rumoured to be a 3.0-litre, six-cylinder dual-overhead-cam unit, produces 340hp at 5,500rpm and 450Nm of torque at 1,380-5,200rpm. It’s thought that an eight-speed torque-converter automatic gearbox will be used. The engine and gearbox, alike, are derived from BMW units shared with the 2019 BMW Z4, with which the Supra was co-developed. Both cars sit on the same carbon-fibre architecture.

It’s not yet known what the top speed of the Supra is. The reported 3.8sec 0-100kph time puts it in league with the PDK-equipped Porsche 911 Carrera S; the Toyota is 14kg lighter and has 86hp less power than the Porsche.

The car's styling takes considerable influence from Toyota's FT-1 concept revealed at the 2014 Detroit motor show, with large air intakes dominating the front end and outlets at the rear flanking slim-line tail-lights and a ducktail spoiler. The double-bubble roof (which can be seen in the preview image of Toyota’s upcoming concept) is also visible.

The images of the car show only Toyota badging front and rear, as well as Toyota’s text logo on the registration plate, with the lack of GR badging – dispelling earlier reports of a Gazoo Racing-badged Supra rather than a return to the Toyota Supra nomenclature.

Toyota would not comment on the leak, neither confirming the legitimacy of the images and statistics, nor dismissing them as false.
