Toyota has taken the wraps off an all-new SUV called the Crown Sport, which is the second model in the carmaker's Crown line-up that also consists of a high-riding sedan. Recently, Toyota also expanded its Century line-up by introducing the Century SUV to sit alongside its sedan sibling.

  1. Crown Sport is a five-seat SUV
  2. Will be sold only in Japan initially
  3. Expected to get hybrid, plug-in hybrid powertrains

Toyota Crown Sport: what is it?

The five-seat Toyota Crown Sport gets a stylish crossover look; it measures around five metres in length and has a wheelbase of 2.7 meters. The styling is typically Toyota, and also has design cues from the Crown sedan. It has plenty of cuts and creases across its bodyshell with prominent haunches and wider fenders at the front and the back.

Up front, there's a double-layered nose with the main headlamp unit sitting in the bumper and a sharp-looking line running across its width and neatly merging with C-shaped LED daytime running lamps. Toyota calls this styling a “hammerhead shark look”. The grille is positioned between the main light units and there’s a prominent faux skid plate as well, confirming the car’s crossover-like intentions.

At the back, it gets a high-set bumper with sharp creases, a faux skid plate, a numberplate housing and connected tail-lamp units.

The interior is full of premium touches with ample use of wood, leather and piano black finishes. The Crown Sport introduces Toyota’s “sound-regulating ceiling tech”, which, according to the brand, helps to maintain a quieter cabin environment.

Toyota Crown Sport: powertrain

While Toyota has not released details of what’s under the hood, we expect it to be powered by a 2.4-litre petrol hybrid powertrain with multiple power outputs, depending on the variant. Toyota will also introduce plug-in hybrid powertrains at a later stage.

Toyota Crown Sport: launch timeline

As part of its expansion plans, Toyota has introduced the Crown high-riding sedan in the North American market. The Crown Sport SUV is currently Japan-only, and sources tell us that the SUV will also go on sale in other markets in the near future.
