2021 Jeep Compass: Which variant to buy?

The 2021 Jeep Compass launched in India earlier this year, with enhanced exterior styling, and a major interior overhaul with an all-new design, new features, and some newer variants thrown into the mix. Which Compass is worth buying? We break it down for you.

    • Jeep Compass is priced between Rs 16.99 and Rs 28.29 lakh
    • 173hp 2.0L diesel engine is the one to go for
    • Our picks - Longitude O, and S variant

2021 Jeep Compass prices (ex-showroom, India, except Kerala)
    1.4P MT1.4P DCT2.0D MT 4x22.0D AT 4x4
    SportRs 16.99 lakhRs 19.49 lakhRs 18.69 lakh-
    Longitude (O)-Rs 21.29 lakhRs 20.49 lakh-
    Limited (O)-Rs 23.29 lakhRs 22.49 lakhRs 26.29 lakh
    Model S-Rs 25.29 lakhRs 24.49 lakhRs 28.29 lakh

Jeep’s diesel is far more effortless

The Compass is available with a 163hp 1.4-litre turbo-petrol engine that’s mated to a 6-speed manual and a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic, available only as a front-wheel drive. The other engine option is the 173hp 2.0-litre diesel engine, mated to a 6-speed manual transmitting power to the front wheels only, or a 9-speed automatic transmission, available as an all-wheel drive. Between the petrol and diesel, the latter feels far more effortless not only due to its higher power output, but more importantly due to the extra 100Nm of torque that it packs in. Also, the diesel is far more fuel efficient in comparison.

If your usage is restricted to the beaten path, the front-wheel drive, manual version will meet your requirements. However, if you regularly tackle hostile road conditions such as driving in snow, or if you simply want a diesel-automatic, you will have to stretch for the all-wheel drive version, that’s approximately Rs 3.80 lakh pricier than the diesel-manual. The petrol-automatic is pretty smooth for what it offers, however, it is slow to respond and isn’t nearly as efficient as the diesel, but being Rs 3 lakh cheaper than the diesel-automatic it could sway buyers in its favor.

Jeep Compass on a budget – Longitude O

If you are restricted due to budget constraints, go in for the Longitude O variant, that’ll offer all the basics features from the base Sport variant like reflector LED headlamps, 17-inch alloys, height-adjustable driver’s seat, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, rear AC vents, reverse camera, ESC, and hill-start assist, among the notable features, but this version also gets key additions like roof rails, a larger 7-inch instrument cluster, dual-zone climate control, auto folding mirrors, proximity sensors on the door with engine start-stop button, larger 10.1-inch touchscreen, connectivity features and grey fabric/vinyl interiors.

Fully loaded Jeep Compass – S variant

Money no bar, the Jeep Compass S variant is extremely well-equipped which not only gets features like leather upholstery, panoramic sunroof, 18-inch alloys, auto-dimming inside mirror, auto headlamps and wipers, electric tailgate, 8-way powered driver’s seat with memory, and side and curtain airbags from the lower Limited variant, but it also gets wireless charging, a dual-tone colour scheme, cooled front seats, a tyre pressure monitoring system, LED projector headlamps, 8-way powered passenger seat, 9-speaker system, 10.2-inch fully digital instrument cluster and a two-tone grey roof. Yes, the S variant is the most expensive variant, however, it offers a lot of premium features for just Rs 2 lakh over a comparable Limited variant, and hence it is the one that gets our vote.
