Mahindra will launch the Thar Roxx in the weeks following its global debut on Independence Day. Arguably the biggest new car launch of 2024, the Thar Roxx will be more than just a stretched iteration of the standard Thar 3-door. It gets a completely different platform and more advanced off-road gear. While the engines will be shared between the two Thars, their outputs will differ slightly

    1. Thar Roxx gets updated platform and an all-metal body shell
    2. Roxx diesel likely in 150hp and 172hp tunes; petrol in 160hp and 175hp
    3. On paper off-road ability to be greater than Thar 3-door

Mahindra Thar Roxx: platform and suspension

With the Scorpio N, launched two years ago in June 2022, Mahindra introduced a new 3G platform and is now bringing an updated iteration of it on the Thar Roxx. The new platform is reportedly 40kg lighter than its predecessor. The 5-door SUV features an all-metal body shell, including a full metal hard top, and is made of more advanced high-strength steel, particularly in the pillar areas, compared to older Mahindra models

As for the suspension setup, the Thar Roxx features an independent front setup with double wishbones and a multilink rear setup with Watts linkage. Mahindra will also equip the Roxx with its ‘Frequency Dependent Damping’ technology to enhance ride quality. These features are also found in the Scorpio N.

Mahindra Thar Roxx diesel engine details

Sources tell us that one of the engine options on the Thar Roxx SUV will be Mahindra’s mHawk Gen2 diesel unit. The displacement will continue to be 2.2 litres, with expected power outputs of 150hp and 350Nm for the entry-level model, and 172hp and 370Nm for the higher variant.

The Scorpio N has the same 2.2-litre diesel engine, but with outputs of 132hp and 171hp. Gearbox options for the Thar Roxx diesel will include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic.

Mahindra Thar Roxx petrol engine details

Mahindra has equipped the Thar Roxx petrol line-up with the 2.0-litre turbo engine used in the Scorpio N and XUV700. Like the diesel variant, the Thar Roxx petrol also gets two power outputs: likely to be 160hp and 330Nm for the entry-level model, and 175hp and 380Nm for the higher variants. The Scorpio N gets a 203hp version of the same engine.

Mahindra Thar Roxx off road gear

The Thar Roxx gets Mahindra’s 4Xplor off-road setup, just like the Scorpio N. It features an electronic brake locking differential (E-BLD) and an electronic locking differential (ELD). There are multiple terrain modes available, such as Snow, Sand and Mud. However, the Thar Roxx does not have the shift-on-the-fly 4WD setup. Instead, it comes with a traditional lever, like the Thar 3-door, offering 2H, 4H, and 4L modes.

The Thar Roxx automatic also gets a unique Crawl Smart Assist feature (CSA). This lets one set a desired speed during off-road driving, between 2.5kph and 30kph, with the vehicle navigating the terrain at this set speed without further driver input.

Another unique feature debuting on the Thar Roxx is the ‘Intelli Turn Assist.’ When engaged, it locks the rear inner wheel according to the steering direction to facilitate a tighter turning radius. This feature operates at speeds under 15 kph and can be activated only for 15 seconds at a time. To use this feature, the driver must first disengage the electronic locking differential.

The Thar Roxx has an approach angle of 41.3 degrees, a ramp-over angle of 23.6 degrees, and a departure angle of 36.1 degrees, along with a water-wading depth of 650mm. In contrast, the Thar 3-door’s approach angle stands at 41.2 degrees, the departure angle at 36 degrees, the ramp-over angle at 26.2 degrees, and the water-wading depth at the same 650mm.

Mahindra Thar Roxx to get more than six variants

While the exact variant breakup is not known yet, the Thar Roxx line-up will start with the W3 variant, which will likely be 2WD only. Sources tell us that the mid-spec variants of the Thar Roxx will get a 4WD option, making it more accessible to a wider customer base.

    Mahindra Thar Roxx expected features

The Thar Roxx will have a long list of variants, each with its own feature set. It will be available only as a 5-seater, with even entry-level versions expected to be decently equipped. Unlike the Thar 3-door, the entire Thar Roxx line-up will come with a metal hard top. Mid-spec variants will have a single-pane sunroof, while higher trims will feature a panoramic setup. Other highlights include dual digital screens, LED lights and additional creature comforts over the Thar 3-door.

    Mahindra Thar Roxx launch timeline

Bookings for the Thar Roxx will commence around Independence Day, when it debuts, with the price announcement scheduled for a few weeks later.
