We recently reported that Toyota has plans to expand the Hilux pickup portfolio with a smaller model based on the IMV 0 concept. Sources now tell us the name of the smaller pickup is likely to be Hilux Champ, and it will go on sale in ASEAN markets like Thailand by 2025.

Toyota Hilux Champ will be the first IMV 0-based model

The IMV 0 platform-based models were previewed in Indonesia first as the Toyota Rangga concept, and more recently, at the Japan Mobility Show 2023 as the IMV 0 concept. Based on recent spy shots of the pickup, the test mule’s design is quite similar to what we have seen on the previously mentioned concepts. Quirky, retro and yet boxy is the main theme, and there are clear references to the iconic FJ40 Land Cruiser.

While there is no word yet on what engines it will come with, expect the Hilux Champ to get a diesel engine (likely the 2.4-litre unit from the Innova Crysta) and a strong-hybrid powertrain. Automatic gearbox options will also be on offer, sending power to the rear wheels, though a 4WD version may also be on the cards. An EV version of the Hilux Champ is not expected to be offered.

Toyota claims that the beauty of the IMV 0 platform comes from its modular design that allows multiple bodies for different uses and applications to be bolted on to the flat-bed section. It can be made into a food truck, a coffee bar, a camper for safaris and even a mountain rescue ambulance.

Toyota Hilux Champ: what’s in store for India?

While there is no official word on whether the Toyota Hilux Champ will make it to India, the IMV 0 platform, which is a ladder-frame unit, is meant for developing markets, and is likely to spawn an affordable version of the Fortuner. However, sources tell us the Hilux Champ is likely to make its way to India in the future, and the SUV derivative is expected to go on sale around a year after the pickup’s India launch.

    Toyota global portfolio expansion

The Japanese company has been expanding some of its more popular and premium nameplates – from the introduction of an SUV in the Century line-up to the addition of the Crown Sport SUV and a high-riding sedan to the Crown range. The expansion of the more affordable Hilux range, especially in markets like India where the large pickup is already an expensive proposition, will surely help Toyota’s sales numbers.
