The i4 is BMW’s second EV for India after the flagship iX SUV, and like the iX, it comes here via the CBU route. The i4 is essentially an all-electric equivalent of the regular 4 Series Gran Coupe which is sold in international markets. The i4 is based on BMW’s CLAR architecture with an 83.9 kWh battery pack mounted in the floor. The battery sends power to a rear-axle mounted electric motor which makes 340hp and 430Nm. In terms of range, BMW claims that the i4 offers a WLTP-certified range of 590km.

The i4, being based on the 4 Series Gran Coupe, retains much of its basic design. It has that typical BMW long-bonnet look with the added flair of a sloping roofline and frameless windows. The large and narrow kidney grilles may not be to everyone’s tastes though.
On the inside, the i4 gets BMW’s new curved display which comprises a 14.9-inch touchscreen that flows into the 12.3-inch instrument cluster. A blue surround for the BMW logo around the steering, a blue-hued start button and blue detailing around the gear-lever are the things that tell you of its EV credentials. Cabin quality is impressive and feels quite premium.
In terms of features, the i4 comes equipped with ambient lighting, three-zone climate control, power front seats and a 17-speaker Harman Kardon sound system. It does not get ADAS tech, 360-degree camera or even keyless entry.
With 590km of WLTP range, the BMW i4 eDrive40 has one of the longest range ratings of all EVs on sale in India. Real world range will no doubt be less – expect something in the range of 450km – but that is still considerable when you account for the performance on offer.
The i4 is remarkably quiet on the inside and feels very smooth to drive, thanks to the linear build-up of power, well weighted steering and well tuned regen braking. The ride is also good but the low ground clearance warrants attention. The i4 shines on open roads with brisk yet usable power and superb agility around the corners.
The BMW i4 costs Rs 69.90 lakh (ex-showroom India) and impresses on multiple levels. It’s got an excellent range which makes it usable on long drives, it’s got great performance and is genuinely fun to drive. Plus, its priced quite well for an EV and is sure to get a lot of luxury car buyers going electric.
