The new Maruti Celerio doesn't rewrite the rulebook of the mid-range hatchback, but then that's not necessarily a bad thing. Its claim of being the most fuel efficient petrol car in India is sure to draw in customers, as is the no-nonsense Maruti ownership experience. Of particular note is an interior that's far more upmarket, and a much larger boot. You now get the de-rigeur Maruti Smartplay Studio touchscreen, although there's no rear-view camera, and also helping with fuel economy is engine stop/start. The driving experience is easy, if unexciting, with a smooth engine, light controls and an AMT that's come a long way since the previous Celerio. A big letdown, however, is the price, which nudges this mid-range hatchback dangerously close to the popular Maruti Swift a segment above.
