Isuzu has unveiled its first electric vehicle concept, the D-Max EV. The all-electric pickup is scheduled to be introduced in European markets like Norway and the UK in 2025, followed by launches in Australia and Thailand, among others. The production-spec D-Max BEV, as Isuzu calls it, will make its global debut at the 45th Bangkok International Motor Show (March 27 to April 7).

    3. 1-tonne payload and 3.5-tonne towing capacity

Isuzu D-Max EV: battery, range, performance

In terms of design, the D-Max EV showcased seems to retain most of the bodywork from its ICE-powered twin. Mechanically, though, it’s quite different. The electric pickup will be equipped with a 66.9kWh battery pack that will power dual motors. The motors allow for four-wheel drive capability and make 177hp and 325Nm (about 14hp more than the diesel model in India). However, the company has still not disclosed any information regarding the range, though for reference, EVs like the BYD Seal Dynamic and Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 get 61.44kWh and 72.6kWh battery packs with ranges of 510km (NEDC) and 631km (ARAI), respectively.

In most markets, the D-Max EV’s 1-tonne of payload capacity and 3.5-tonne towing capacity will qualify it as a commercial vehicle, much like the current diesel model.

Currently, the Isuzu D-Max in India comes in entry-level Hi-Lander (priced at Rs 20.60 lakh) and the more upscale D-Max V-Cross (priced from Rs 24.30 lakh), and is powered by a 163hp, 360Nm, 1.9-litre diesel engine with either two-wheel or four-wheel drive.

The Isuzu D-Max rivals the Toyota Hilux (Rs 30.40 lakh-37.90 lakh) in India. In 2022, Toyota also showcased their Hilux BEV concept, which is scheduled to go into production later this year. Although specific details regarding the electric Hilux have not been disclosed, it is conceivable that these technologies will be shared with the other cars that are built on the IMV platform like the Innova Crysta and Fortuner.
