I own two cars, a Honda City and a Baleno, both mainly used for city driving. My total petrol expense is around ₹17,000 per month, with the Baleno being used more frequently than the City. I am now looking to buy a trouble-free EV, but am confused between the Tata Punch EV, the MG Windsor EV, and the new 3XO EV. I live in an independent house, so home charging is not an issue. Please guide me.
Electric cars work particularly well for city driving, and all three options you’re considering are solid choices. In our real-world range test, the Tata Punch EV (Long Range) delivered around 242 km in urban conditions, which is more than adequate for everyday city use. It is a compact car, though, so if the smaller size isn’t a concern for you, the Punch EV is a sensible option.
If cabin space is a higher priority, the Windsor EV is the better fit. In our range test, it returned a real-world figure of about 327 km in the city. The Pro variant is likely to offer even better range, while also providing a noticeably roomier cabin and a more comfortable overall experience.

Hi, autocar team, I am looking for a compact EV as my secondary car. Have a budget of 10 to 12 lakhs. The car should have enough range for a weekly 100km highway run, though it will mostly be used in the city otherwise. Which car would you guys suggest?
Your best bet is the Tata Punch EV. While being compact enough, it manages to pack in the features and creature comforts of a more expensive car. It comes with two battery options - 25kWh and 35kWh - and while the smaller one's range is rated 315km, we recommend you stretch for the larger one, which is rated at 421km.
Yes, the real-world range will be lower - in our real-world test, the 35kWh battery covered between 216km and 242km on a full charge, which should give you a comfortable buffer on your weekly 100km run. However, opting for this version would require you to stretch your budget by around a lakh or so.

Hi, I’m looking for an entry-level EV for my daily office commute of about 120 km per day. My options are the Tata Tiago EV and Punch EV. Is there any update expected for the Tiago EV in the near future, or do you have any other suggestions?
Tata Punch EV is a better option for your usage. In our real-world range test, Punch EV Long Range delivered 229km with an efficiency of 6.54km/kWh. As you travel around 120 km a day, Punch EV LR will offer you more and a hassle-free ownership experience.
Tata Tiago EV has a real-world range of around 187 km (as tested by us), which is manageable, but will always be borderline for your usage. Punch EV's cabin is also more spacious and can carry more luggage compared to the Tiago EV. So, unless you are on a budget, you should go for the Tata Punch EV LR.

I am a retired person. I may travel around 200 km per month and also take 2-3 long trips of 500-800 km per year. Should I choose the Tata Punch Automatic or the Tata Punch EV Automatic?
The Tata Punch EV is a pleasure to drive and an excellent city car, but unfortunately, it doesn’t have the range to do 500km without a charge. Stopping to charge on the highway is not advisable, as the charging infrastructure isn’t very reliable.
If this is going to be your only car, it's best to go for the Tata Punch 1.2 petrol automatic. It’s nowhere near as smooth or peppy to drive as the Punch EV, but you get the same rugged build and comfortable ride.

I am planning to buy a new car and travel about 140 kilometers every day. I am confused about whether to choose an electric vehicle (EV) or an internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle. Please suggest.
If you travel 140km every day, an electric vehicle (EV) would be a good choice. The running cost of an EV is much lower than that of a petrol or diesel car, and the maintenance costs are also lower.
The only downside is that the initial cost of an EV is higher than that of a petrol car. However, the running cost savings will help you recover this cost over time.
If you are looking for a compact SUV for city commutes, you can consider the Tata Punch EV, which is a good option.

Which is the best vehicle type for a daily commute of around 100 km: EV, petrol, CNG, or diesel? We undertake long drives only once every six months. Please help me choose the right car.
Given that your monthly running is quite high, we would recommend you consider an electric car. Most EVs on the market today will easily offer a range sufficient to cover your 100 km a day, and over the course of time, you will definitely save a lot in fuel bills.
However, it is very important to note that you must have access to your own charging at home or your place of work. Relying on public chargers will be difficult, given that you will have to find one vacant and working and then spend your time there.
We are unaware of your budget, but you can consider the Tata Punch EV or the Hyundai Creta Electric, both of which are good choices in their respective segments.

My daily travel is around 50 km, and I want to buy a used EV within a budget of 10 lakhs. Please suggest the vehicle.
The Tata Tiago EV and MG Comet would fit within your budget, and if you are strict about this, we would recommend you consider these.
Between the two, the MG Comet is better for short intra-city runs, but it comes across more as a runabout rather than a full-fledged car, and that's where the Tiago EV would be better.
However, if you can up your budget slightly, the Tata Punch EV would be the best option. It's compact for the city, rides very well and feels very modern.

I want to change/upgrade to an automatic petrol car that is easy to drive. I will be using it mostly for local shopping, etc. My budget is between 8-9 lakhs, and I am open to EVs.
Since you are open to an EV, we would suggest you look at the Tata Punch EV. It is a little above your budget, but you will get a car that is easy to drive for your local shopping trips and being an electric car will be the smoothest automatics you can find.
The trouble is, below Rs 10 lakh most automatics are automated manuals (AMT) which are not smooth shifters, and you can feel the shifts as they happen. If you must stick with your 9 lakh budget, have a look at the new Maruti Suzuki Swift, its light controls make it easy to drive, especially in the city and the car rides well too.

Hello, Autocar. As a car fan, I’ve been a reader for quite some time. I want to buy a new car for my parents, who are first-time drivers, so an automatic is a must. I want a hatchback that is easy to drive and low on maintenance. Most of the driving will be on the highway or from the village to the nearby town. I’ve shortlisted the new Suzuki Swift ZXI AMT. Please share your opinion. Is there any other option you would suggest, if not the Swift?
The Maruti Suzuki Swift that you have shortlisted is a decent option for your parents. The controls are light and easy to operate, and the engine is tuned for efficiency rather than performance. Thus, your parents, who are first-time drivers, would find this a good car to use.
The only issue is the AMT gearbox, which is not a smooth shifter. Take a test drive and see how they feel about this. If you are open to an electric car, you can opt for the Tata Punch EV. It would offer a smooth and easy drive, and the high seating point would offer good visibility.

My daily running is 300 km. I want to know if shifting to an EV is a good idea or if I should continue with an ICE vehicle.
You have a very high daily running, thus, going purely by running cost, shifting to an EV would make sense. However, you would have to ensure you get a model that offers a good range. Cars like the MG Comet and the Tata Punch EV would not provide you with a comfortable enough driving range for your daily running.
You would have to look at the Tata Nexon EV, which would just about suffice. Thus, you would have to spend more to ensure you have a model with a range sufficient to ensure you do not have to stop to charge in the middle of the day.
So if your budget does not permit, stick with an ICE car and look for something efficient like the Maruti Suzuki Swift or look for a CNG car if pumps are available in your area.
