    Utility vehicles (UV) sold over 2,00,000 units in India for the fifth month in a row in May 2024. As per wholesale data from Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) and companies, the UV segment, which comprises of SUVs and MPVs, despatched a total of 2,16,572 units in May 2024, up 17 percent year on year (May 2023: 1,85,100 units).

    The cumulative five-month sales at 1.13 million units constitute a handsome 26 percent YoY increase (January-May 2023: 8,97,980 units). UVs sold until April 2024 is already 48 percent of the record 2.35 million units sold in CY2023.

    Of the 16 manufacturers in the fray, five of them account for 93 percent or 2,02,740 units of the UVs despatched in May 2024.

    Maruti Suzuki May 2024 sales

    Maruti Suzuki India sold 54,204 units, up 17 percent over May 2023.Though it remains on top, its UV market share gains are flat at 25.02 percent as against May 2023’s 24.98 percent. The Brezza compact SUV (14,186 units) was its bestseller, followed by the Ertiga MPV (13,893 units), Fronx (12,681 units), and the Grand Vitara (9,736 units). May 2024 also saw the Fronx cross the 1,50,000 unit sales mark within 14 months of its launch.

    Mahindra May 2024 sales

    Mahindra, with a portfolio laden with SUVs, sold 43,218 units this month. This is a strong 31 percent growth (May 2023: 32,883 units) and marks the fifth month in a row that Mahindra has surpassed the 40,000-unit despatches mark. May 2024's despatches are also its highest yet this year, and just 490 units below its best-ever monthly wholesales of 43,708 units in October 2023.

    Tata Motors May 2024 sales

    Tata Motors, with an estimated 33,689 units last month (up 14 percent), has snatched the number 3 rank from Hyundai Motor India. Its UV market share has dropped marginally from 16 percent to 15.55 percent. The battle between the Nexon and Punch has tilted in favour of the Punch this year. In May 2024, the Punch was the bestselling Tata product with 18,949 units to the Nexon’s 11,457 units.

    Hyundai May 2024 sales

    Hyundai Motor India despatched a total of 32,840 UVs last month, up 18 percent YoY (May 2023: 27,728 units). Hyundai retails seven SUVs (Creta, Venue, Alcazar, Exter, Tucson, and the electric Ioniq 5 and Kona). The Creta facelift that was launched in January is the company’s bestseller – 14,662 units sold in May are much above the Venue’s 9,327 units. As of April, SUVs accounted for 67 percent of Hyundai’s total passenger vehicle sales of 49,151 units in May 2024.

    Kia India, with 19,500 UVs despatched in May, takes fifth position. This is a 4 percent increase over year-ago sales of 18,766 units. The new Sonet compact SUV has emerged as Kia India’s highest-selling model in May with 7,433 units, followed by the Seltos midsize SUV (6,736 units) and the Carens MPV (5,316 units).Interestingly, the Sonet has outsold the Seltos for the fifth straight month. Between January and May 2024, the Sonet’s cumulative sales are 44,716 units or 31 percent more than the Seltos’ 34,038 units.

    Toyota May 2024 sales

    Toyota Kirloskar Motor despatched 19,289 units, which is a 37 percent growth YoY and accounts for 80 percent of its total PV wholesales in May 2024 (23,979 units).The recently launched Urban Cruiser Taisor has sold 2,180 units, and the Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Rumion sold 5,825 units.
