Maruti Suzuki is in the process of replacing the ageing 1.3-litre diesel engine in the Ciaz midsize sedan and the Ertiga MPV. The price announcement of the Ciaz 1.5 diesel and Ertiga 1.5 diesel is likely to take place sometime this month. According to a leaked document, the new Maruti 1.5-litre diesel engine will deliver 94hp at 4,000rpm, with the torque figure rated at 225Nm.
This new engine will be introduced in the Ertiga and the Ciaz as a BS-IV version, and will later be upgraded to BS-VI norms sometime close to the April 2020 deadline. Both vehicles will come with a 6-speed manual transmission as standard; there is no news on an AMT variant. Additionally, the Ciaz 1.5 and the Ertiga 1.5 will not come with Maruti’s Smart Hybrid system.
According to the document, the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga will get the new 1.5-litre diesel engine in the following variants:
- Maruti Suzuki Ertiga VDi 1.5 diesel
- Maruti Suzuki Ertiga ZDi 1.5 diesel
- Maruti Suzuki Ertiga ZDi+ 1.5 diesel
Similarly , the new 1.5-litre engine will be available in the following trims of the Ciaz:
- Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Delta 1.5 diesel
- Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Zeta 1.5 diesel
- Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Alpha 1.5 diesel
Interestingly, there is no mention of the 1.5-litre engine on the base-spec Ertiga LDi and the Ciaz Sigma variants, which could mean these trims will continue to be sold with the old 1.3-litre unit, for now. The document also confirms that the Ertiga 1.5 will continue to be sold as a seven-seater.
After introducing the in-house diesel motor on the Ertiga and Ciaz, Maruti Suzuki is expected to replace the S-Cross’ 1.3-litre diesel with the new 1.5-litre unit.
