We like
Smart cabin
Peppy and efficient engine
We don't like
Polarising design
Top versions are pricey
The Ignisโ design is polarising, built to appeal to the young and young at heart, and avoids Marutiโs usual safe styling. Based on the fifth-gen AA+ platform, itโs newer than the Balenoโs B-platform, but shares its engineering approach. At 825kg, the base model is lighter than the Baleno and already meets upcoming crash norms.
Styled as a mini crossover with retro cues from the โ70s-โ80s Suzuki Cervo, it features Suzukiโs โProgressive Triadโ on the C-pillar, resembling the Adidas logo. The wide front grille houses inset headlights, LED DRLs and projector lamps, while the large bumper integrates fog lamps and number plate. From the side, chunky C-pillars with a sharp upward kink dominate, alongside flared wheel arches, side cladding and unique squarish alloy spokes. The rear is upright with a sharply sloped windscreen, tall hatch and squarish tail-lamps, though this angle looks a bit awkward. Overall, styling is funky and distinctive.
7.0
The cabin continues with quirky design touches. The Progressive Triad appears on the console box, often colour-matched with the exterior, as are the cylindrical door handles. The dashboard uses straight lines with rectangular vents and a โfloatingโ touchscreen above the neat climate control unit, while lower variants get a basic manual AC and button-type music system.
At 3,700mm, itโs shorter than the Swift but has a slightly longer wheelbase, is taller but narrower. Rear space is tight for three, but legroom and headroom are generous, with upright seating and room under the front seats. Front seats are comfortable with good bolstering though slightly soft. Height-adjustable driverโs seat and tilt steering add to practicality.
8.0
The Ignis gets the 1.2 K series petrol with manual and AMT options. The petrol manual is peppy, rev-happy and sporty-sounding, though the clutch is tricky and steering too light with poor self-centring. Petrol AMT is as AMTโs go, jerky when pushed a bit and in this case much less fun than the manual.
8.0
The 1.2 petrol returns an ARAI 20.89kpl for both the manual and AMT models.
8.0
Ride quality is excellent. It feels more planted than its size suggests, handling bumps with composure.
9.0
Features include the SmartPlay system with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, USB, Aux and navigation, plus rear camera support. Other equipment: new steering wheel design, start-stop button, electric folding ORVMs, steering controls, all-round power windows and puddle lamps. Safety is standardised with dual airbags, ABS with EBD and ISOFIX child-seat mounts across all trims.
7.0
The Ignis, stands out with its funky looks, rich equipment list and spacious interior. Downsides include a jerky AMT and lifeless steering. Still, with LED projectors, touchscreen, auto climate control and a rewarding engine, itโs unlike a typical Maruti. Priced from โน5.85 lakh (petrol) to โน8.26 lakh its good value at the lower end with top trims being pricey.

Trending Questions on Maruti Suzuki Ignis - Answered by Autocar Experts
Hi, I booked the 2026 Tata Punch Pure Plus manual on 11th February, and the dealer committed to deliver it on 27th February, but now they are denying delivery. I want to cancel the booking and am planning to buy the Maruti Ignis Zeta AGS. My driving will mostly be in the city, with highway running of about 1,000 km once every three months. Will it be a good decision to buy the Ignis Zeta AGS, or should I wait for the Tata Punch Pure Plus manual? Or is there any other AMT/AGS car that I can consider within a โน7-8 lakh budget? Kindly suggest.
If you do not want to wait any longer, going ahead with the Maruti Suzuki Ignis Zeta AGS is a perfectly sensible decision for your usage. For mostly city driving with an occasional highway run once every few months, the Ignis fits the bill well. Its 1.2 litre four cylinder petrol engine is smoother and more responsive than the Punchโs motor, and the AMT calibration feels easy to live with in traffic.
It has good space on the inside, has a comfortable ride quality and, being a Maruti Suzuki, offers a hassle-free ownership experience with low maintenance costs and wide service support.
One important point to keep in mind with the Ignis is safety. When tested by Global NCAP in 2022, it scored a one-star rating, so this is something you should be fully aware of before making a final decision.
If timely delivery, the Ignis Zeta AGS is a good buy. If safety rating and a more rugged feel are higher priorities and you are willing to wait, then sticking with the Tata Punch makes sense.
I am 70 years old and currently driving an Alto K10 manual in Palakkad, Kerala. I want to upgrade to a 1.2 L automatic with good road visibility and an adjustable seat. My budget is โน8-10 lakh. Please suggest the best option.
You can consider the Maruti Suzuki Ignis AMT. It is a good option for you as it has the height adjustable drivers seat and its tall-boy-like design means you sit higher up and have a good view of the road outside.
It also makes the Ignis easy to get in and out of. The 1.2-litre engine is peppy enough, and the AMT gearbox is smooth when driven at a relaxed pace. Moreover, you will get the top spec version within your budget, and the Ignis is also a very reliable car.
I have recently got my driving licence. Hence not confident in driving a car. But I plan to buy a car. My budget is under Rs. 11 lacs. Prefers low maintenance cost, good mileage and good thigh support in seating. My daily running will be around 5 km within Kochi city in Kerala. My monthly running will be about 80 km in single journey. Prefers petrol car. My parking space is about 12.5 foot in length. Hence length of car should be less than 12.5 foot. Which car is suitable for me.
The best options for you are the Maruti Suzuki Ignis and the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios.
Both cars are compact and simple to handle, which makes them easy to park in tight spots and suitable for a new driver. These models are well within your budget and known for low running and maintenance costs. They will deliver good fuel efficiency for your short daily runs within Kochi and occasional longer trips of around 80 km.
The Ignis is shorter in length and fits your parking requirement comfortably. It also has a peppy petrol engine and a comfortable ride quality. The Grand i10 Nios is slightly longer than 3.8 metres, but it feels more premium on the inside and offers a refined cabin.
Which car would be more suitable for city use and occasional highway driving: the Swift or the Ignis? My budget is around Rs 8 lakh, which can be stretched. Or should I look at lower variants of the Sonet or 3XO?
I have been following Autocar since the early 2000s and want to highlight what I feel is Maruti Suzukiโs stepchild treatment of some highly competent cars that suffered due to poor marketing. Models like the original Baleno sedan and Altura, Grand Vitara, Kizashi, A-Star, Ritz, and now the Ignis were strong products in their segments, yet failed commercially. I request the Autocar team to objectively highlight the strengths of the Ignis, especially when it is compared with cars like the Wagon R, Celerio, or even the new Swift with the 3-cylinder Z-series engine. From a pure product standpoint, does the Wagon R really come close to the Ignis?
Thank you for your comments and for being such a long-time reader. We respect your views on the various Maruti-Suzuki cars that didnโt get their due. However, it is not Maruti-Suzuki that decides the success or failure of a car, but the customer who is very demanding and has other choices and options.
The Kizashi failed because, for the price, customers didnโt see value in it. The A-Star was too small and cramped for the price. Going back to the start of this century, the Baleno sedan was overpriced, and the Baleno Altura failed because Indian customers donโt like station wagons or estates. In fact, there has never been a successful estate car yet.
The Ignis, too, though a capable car, has not clicked largely due to its design. The reason we recommend the Wagon R regularly is that it is a practical choice. It offers unmatched space and is easy to drive and live with - attributes that have made it so popular.
Sir, I am planning to buy a new automatic car for my sister. The priorities are budget-friendliness, safety, good mileage, and ease of driving, as she is a new driver. The budget is โน7 to 7.5 lakh. I am considering the Tata Tiago, but am open to other suggestions. Please advise.
I need an automatic car within a budget of โน7.5 lakh, and I prefer Maruti Suzuki. Could you please suggest some options?
You should choose between the Maruti Suzuki Ignis Zeta AMT and the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R 1.2 AMT ZXI Plus. Both models are powered by 1.2-litre petrol engines that give them a power advantage over other automatic Marutis in your budget (namely, Celerio, Alto K10 and S-Presso).
Both use automated manual transmission or AMT-type automatics. While these aren't the slickest automatic gearboxes, Maruti's AMTs work smoothly enough if you adopt an easygoing driving style. Fuel economy is also excellent.
Of the two, the Wagon R is more spacious and has a more absorbent ride comfort. On the other hand, the Ignis packs in more features for the same money. If cabin space isn't a deal breaker, opt for the Ignis.
I am a senior citizen looking for a small car with very low usage. I am considering the Maruti Suzuki Ignis Sigma. Is it a good option?
I am 65 years old and will be superannuating from service soon. My current car is chauffeur-driven. I am now looking for a comfortable automatic car for city use that I can drive myself, with occasional long trips of up to 300 km. My budget is โน8 lakh on-road. Please suggest suitable options.
I am interested in buying a new Maruti car around โน6.5-7 lakh. Is it better to buy a top-variant Ignis or a mid-variant Swift? I am looking for a manual drive only, high driver seating, reasonable safety and entertainment features in this budget range, and decent resale value.
Since your priority is a high seating position, you should go for the top variant of the Maruti Suzuki Ignis. The Ignis has a slightly elevated driving position compared to the Maruti Suzuki Swift and better all-around visibility.
The Swiftโs interiors feel a touch claustrophobic in comparison. What makes the case for the Ignis is the 1.2 K-series four-cylinder engine, which feels peppier and smoother than the Swiftโs Z12, three-cylinder motor. However, the Swift, which is a more popular model, has a higher resale value.
