Maruti Suzuki will take the wraps off its first born-EV SUV – based on the eVX concept – in October next year, with a price announcement also expected around the same time. This all-electric SUV is being developed with Toyota, which will have its own version debuting a little later.

    1. Maruti eVX will go on sale before its Toyota derivative
    2. The electric SUV will rival the Creta EV
    3. Will be made in India for domestic and export markets

Maruti eVX to be made in Gujarat for all markets

Maruti and Toyota's born-EV SUVs will be built at Suzuki’s Gujarat plant that has a target to manufacture over 1.25 lakh vehicles per annum at full capacity. This will be the mother plant for both SUVs and will cater to the domestic and export markets. The SUV will go on sale in India first, despite being a global offering. The platform used by Maruti’s eVX SUV – and its Toyota version – is a derivative of Toyota’s 40PL electric skateboard architecture, which is internally codenamed 27PL and is being heavily localised.

Maruti eVX being road tested overseas

The SUV was recently spotted testing in Poland in near production-ready avatar. This new born-EV SUV will be 4.3 metres long and will be aimed squarely at the upcoming Creta EV, which is expected to be shown at the 2025 Auto Expo. The EV SUV will have a 2,700mm wheelbase, thanks to the born-EV skateboard platform, which will help liberate cabin room. The eVX-based SUV will also have plush interiors and a decent list of creature comforts, safety features and tech.

    Maruti eVX powertrain, battery, range

As far as powertrain goes, Maruti had announced at the 2023 Auto Expo that the concept had a 60kWh battery with 550km range. The production version is expected to have similar capacity battery, with a real-world range of around 500km, however, the entry-level variant is expected to come equipped with a smaller battery of around 48kWh and around 400km of real-world range.

    Maruti eVX rivals in India

Hyundai is readying the Creta EV that will most likely debut in early 2025, and will be the eVX's main rival.
