The bonnet is placed high up and the tall ridges on either side make it look bigger. On the bonnet sit the new Daytime Running Lamps (DRLs) and lower down sit the main projector headlamps and fog lights. The Nexon gets new 16-inch alloy wheels with inserts and there’s a larger spoiler on top, which conceals the rear wiper. The ground clearance stands at a class-leading 208mm.
The dash has a clean design with layers and straight lines. The seats up front are sufficiently large and get good bolstering while rear seat comfort and space are very impressive so you can seat three in relative comfort. Tata’s new steering wheel has a logo on it that is illuminated. The Nexon gets twin high-resolution 10.25-inch screens. The central screen is sharp, clear and quick to respond with the fully digital instrument panel can be used to view a full-sized map. There is a central panel that features capacitive touch buttons for the temperature and fan controls. The Nexon gets a 9-speaker JBL audio system with a subwoofer, TPMS and connected car tech.
Tata’s three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine makes 120hp and is available with a 5 or 6-speed manual gearbox, a 6-speed AMT and a 7-speed twin-clutch automatic. There is some small amount of vibration from the engine off idle and a hint of judder at low revs. The Nexon gets a 115hp diesel engine that makes a strong 260Nm of torque from 1,500rpm It is available with a 6-speed diesel and 6-speed AMT. Keep the engine spinning between 2,000 to 4,000 rpm for a good amount of torque.
Mileage figures for the Nexon are 17.01 - 17.44kpl for the petrol variants, depending on the gearbox, while the diesel variants have a claimed efficiency of 23.23kpl and 24.08kpl for the manual and AMT, respectively.
There’s a hint of stiffness when it comes to low-speed ride due to the setup and tall springs, but go faster and the ride immediately smoothes out. Body control and bump absorption over really bad sections is impressive. The steering is also light at low speeds, direct enough when you go faster and accurate enough to not have you making corrections all the time at higher speeds.
At a price of Rs 8.10 lakh-15.50 lakh, Tata’s segment leader is fresh on the outside and what is likely to appeal to buyers is the more upmarket cabin. It rides well, drives with plenty of confidence and has a practical and hardy SUV feel. It doesn’t feel as mechanically sophisticated as others, but the Nexon delivers an overall package and will likely be a bang for your buck.
