I am a first-time driver planning to buy an MG Comet for city use. Are there any other small automatic/electric vehicles that would be better than the Comet?

The MG Comet is a good option for a first-time driver. It is easy to drive, has a spacious cabin, despite being a two-door, and the electric powertrain is smooth and silent enough.

However, the 2-doors mean the Comet is not the most practical option in its segment, the boot is small, and the small tyres mean the ride can get choppy. If this is important to you, you could consider the Tata Tiago EV. Otherwise the Comet will do just fine.

Hi, Iโ€™m planning to buy a new SUV. My daily running is about 50 km. Should I choose an EV, petrol, or diesel? Iโ€™ve shortlisted the Harrier EV, Mahindra XEV9S, the upcoming Mahindra XUV 7XO diesel, and the Tata Sierra petrol. Please help me decide.

An EV will surely offer a smooth driving experience with the lowest running cost. However, it does have its challenges when it comes to long-distance trips. The charging infrastructure needed for a hassle-free road trip is not yet in place, and therefore, if you choose to take your SUV on a long-distance trip, it will require a lot of planning.

Considering your 50km running, a petrol SUV will do the job well, and in that case, the new Tata Sierra is a good option. It has a strong road presence, a strong petrol engine and a roomy cabin with a lengthy feature list as well. Unlike the XUV 7XO, it isn't a 7-seater. So if you don't need the third row, the Sierra is a good option to consider.

I have been using Tata Punch for a year. For me, this car met all my expectations being a new driver as well as a first-time owner. Now, I want to move towards a more premium segment and comfort with more latest features available in the market. Which car should I buy? I bought the Punch under 10 lakh (on-road). This time, my budget is under 20 lakh. I prefer Indian brands only.

The Tata Safari is the one for you. It will feel like a huge step up compared to a Tata Punch in all aspects - road presence, cabin space, interior quality, equipment, drive experience, etc. Multiple variants of the Safari will fall within your budget - petrol, diesel or turbo-petrol, so based on your usage, you could pick the one that's right for you.
We've experienced the Turbo-petrol AT and Diesel AT, and out of these, the former is our pick for its smoothness, refinement and strong performance.

I am being offered a Tata Curvv EV Empowered Plus A 55 (Electric) variant at a discount of around โ‚น4 lakh after the consumer discount, Tata EV loyalty benefit and insurance discount. The on-road price comes to โ‚น19 lakh. The car also includes the November 2025 updates such as rear window shades, passive rear ventilated seats and dual-zone auto climate control. Is the Curvv EV worth it at this price, or should I go for the Harrier EV? I also own a Punch EV, but it is not sufficient for highway trips.

Sure, the discounted price makes the Tata Curvv EV an attractive proposition; however, the Harrier EV is a far superior car overall - it has a larger battery, its motor makes more power, the cabin is far more spacious, and even in terms of road presence, it does a much better job.
Yes, on account of its size and weight, its range might not be significantly more (despite the larger battery) than a Curvv EV, but between the two, it is the Tata Harrier EV that gets our vote.

Iโ€™ve been driving a Datsun Redi-GO for two years and now plan to buy a compact SUV, preferably automatic. I will commute about 50 km daily. Iโ€™ve shortlisted the Tata Punch, Citroรซn C3X and Skoda Kylaq. My budget is around 11 lakh. Which is the best option for me?

Considering your budget, the Citroen C3X Shine 1.2 Turbo Petrol AT is a solid choice. The Tata Punch offers only an AMT, and the automatic variant of the Skoda Kushaq will take you well past โ‚น11 lakh.

The C3Xโ€™s 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine is reliable, performs well, and comes paired with a 6-speed torque-converter automatic, which will give you a smooth and enjoyable driving experience.

Iโ€™m looking for a car, either an SUV or a sedan. My budget is up to โ‚น25 lakh. The car must-have: a 5-star safety rating and excellent ride comfort; priority is the best suspension in this price bracket for a mix of highway cruising and rough roads.

We suggest you wait for the updated Mahindra XUV 7XO (earlier XUV700), which is launching on 5th January, or for the German siblings, the Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun, as both are due for updates soon as well. Otherwise, you can go ahead with the Tata Harrier or Safari.

Confused between Nexon EV and Tata Sierra petrol. I wanted an electric car car but after seeing the new Sierra, I am confused

We suggest you go with the Tata Sierra Turbo Petrol. It is a very good package, has all the features, performance, space and looks. Sierraโ€™s new 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine feels refined; it puts out 160hp and 255Nm, the ride is comfortable, and on fast turns it remains planted. Looks stunning and its interiors are more premium than any other Tata.
This Tata car is loaded with features, slick screens (top variant gets 3 of these), extendable thigh support for front seats, front ventilated seats, powered seats, ADAS and many more.

I am planning to buy the Tata Altroz Pure S AMT. Can you suggest the best alternative options from Hyundai or Honda within a โ‚น10 lakh budget? Which of these will offer the most ease and comfort for both long drives and city driving?

Your choice of the Tata Altroz is good, the car delivers a very good ride, is spacious and safe too. If you would like to check out an alternate, have a look at the Maruti Suzuki Baleno

Like the Altroz, you will find that the Baleno too has ample interior space, has a good ride quality, and it's safe too, and of course, will also come in under your Rs 10 lakh budget.

I am a new learner and still not fully confident with my driving lessons. I am looking to buy my first car, which should be safe and within a budget of โ‚น5 to โ‚น7 lakh. Can you help me decide which option to go for? Also, I am not keen on Maruti cars as they do not have a good safety rating.

The Tata Punch would make for a good first car for you. Compared to hatchbacks, the high seating will offer you a good view outside, and the compact dimensions will make it easy to maneuver and park, especially if you live in a congested area. Moreover, this Tata car also has a very good ride quality, is well-equipped, and is safe too.

I am looking to buy an EV and am considering the Harrier EV or the XEV 9S. The main reasons for buying a new EV are bigger space and cost-effective travel. Could you advise if considering an EV is good or not?

You can go for an electric car of your choice as long as you imbibe some discipline about charging your vehicle, as public charging is still unreliable and can be expensive too. Long drives on EVs require some amount of pre-planning. The other downside is lower resale value. But with the right mindset, EVs can be enjoyable.
Between the Tata Harrier EV and the Mahindra XEV 9S, our pick would be XEV 9S. It was launched recently with lots of features and attractive pricing.
