Souped-up Hyundai i30 N Fastback on the cards for India launch

Hyundai has been contemplating introducing its N performance sub-brand in India. And the i30 N Fastback could very well be the launch vehicle for the job. The model is on display as part of Hyundai’s expansive Auto Expo 2020 display.

The i30 N Fastback follows the i30 N as the second model from Hyundai’s N division. The specs do make for some impressive reading. Powering the i30N is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine which produces 250hp with the standard package and 275hp with the performance package, with 353Nm of peak torque (378Nm with the overboost function). Power is sent to the front wheels via an electronic limited-slip differential (E-LSD). Oh, and a 6-speed manual gearbox is standard. The i30 N Fastback also features 5 drive modes – Eco, Normal, Sport, Sport N, and N Custom – an automatic rev-matching function and launch control.

Compared to the standard i30, the N also boasts uprated suspension, brakes and tyres to make the most of the added performance. The i30 N Fastback also looks rather attractive – the ‘5-door coupe’ has a long, low and brooding look, and the impact is amplified by the sporty bumpers that get N-typical red piping. Its cabin is a sporty place too, with red detailing contrasting well with the black theme inside.

The i30N Fastback is expected to be brought into India as a full import. Hyundai is likely to make the most of new rules that allow manufacturers to import up to 2,500 cars a year without the need for homologation. The Hyundai i30 N Fastback will not have any direct competition, if and when launched in India. While the Hyundai i30 N Fastback will be a low-volume model, it could pave the way for more mass-market products from N in India.

Aside from the i30 N Fastback, Hyundai also unveiled facelifts for the Tucson and Verna, along with the new-gen Creta and the Grand i10 Nios turbo-petrol at Auto Expo 2020.
