In October, Maruti Suzuki began exporting the 5-door Jimny to markets like South Africa, the Middle East and Latin America, and now, the made-in-India Jimny is also being exported to Australia where it will be sold alongside the 3-door model. Called the Jimny XL, the Australia-spec 5-door SUV gets one major update over the India-spec model, and that’s the inclusion of an ADAS suite.

    1. Jimny gets the same 1.5-litre petrol engine in Australia
    2. Gets ADAS features like autonomous braking, lane departure warning

Jimny gets ADAS tech in Australia only

The Australia-spec 5-door Jimny gets an ADAS suite with Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) as standard to essentially comply with local safety norms. The Australian government mandated the fitment of this feature earlier in March this year for all its passenger vehicles as well as commercial vehicles, which is why the Jimny gets it. Additionally, without AEB, a car would be rated zero stars under the Australian NCAP safety norms.

Apart from AEB, the ADAS suite on the 5-door Jimny for Australia also includes features like lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, high-beam assist, and weaving alert for which it employs an additional front camera and laser sensors. Additionally, it gets six airbags, ESC and traction control as standard. Even the 3-door Jimny that’s exported from Japan comes equipped with these features. ADAS aside, the equipment list on the Australia-spec Jimny is mostly similar to the India-spec model.

Under the skin, the 5-door Jimny continues with the same 1.5-litre, naturally aspirated petrol engine that comes mated to either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed torque converter automatic. The engine, however, is tuned slightly differently to produce 100hp and 130Nm of torque, which is 5hp and 4Nm less than the India-spec model. Both the 3-door and 5-door models come equipped with the AllGrip 4x4 system.

India is currently the only market that manufactures the Jimny 5-door, thereby also being the sole export hub for this model.
